Title: How to Eliminate Mould from Your Home

1
How to Eliminate Mould from Your Home
Despite what you may believe, we all have mould
in our homes. This is because mould is
everywhere. We can never eliminate it. It appears
wherever there is organic matter somewhere it
can find food and sustenance. However, it is
certainly possible to prevent mould from become a
problem in the home, and from gaining a purchase.
In particular, it is possible to prevent and
eliminate black mould, which is the most common
form of mould problems in the home.
2
How Does Problem Mould Appear? The first thing
that you need to do is to understand the
conditions that make mould more likely. Mould
thrives in damp, dark, conditions. This means,
that in order to minimise mould and to prevent
black mould, you need to make your home as dry
and full of light as possible.

How to Keep the House Dry First, you need to
tackle any damp. You can use special damp
detectors to find the problem areas within your
home, or it might be obvious where these are
because of the accumulation of mould. Here are
a few common problems that lead to dampness
within the home The damp course isnt
working. The damp course creates a block between
the foundations and the home, ensuring that damp
does not rise from the floor into the house. If
the damp course is damaged, it needs fixing. You
can contact a damp course specialist who will
survey your damp course and make changes where
needed.

The drainpipes arent working properly. This
can happen for a number of reasons perhaps the
drain is blocked perhaps the drainpipe runs onto
a path, instead of down the drain perhaps the
drainpipes are blocked. Next time it rains,
walk around your property and make sure that the
drainpipes are working. There should be no water
falling from the roof directly onto the floor. If
it looks as if theres a waterfall coming out of
the drainpipes, then they need fixing. Also, make
sure that the drainpipes are running into the
drain, and that there is no blockage at street
level.
7
Make sure that there is sufficient ventilation,
particularly in bathrooms and utility rooms.
Ventilation is essential in drying out the house,
and most experts recommend opening the windows
for 10 minutes a day every day. Because our
homes are airtight now (because of energy saving
regulations), this can lend to damp inside the
house if it is not well ventilated. Make sure you
open the windows and use extractor fans in rooms
that have no windows. Make sure that there is
sufficient heat in winter. This will dry the air.
8
If drying clothes indoors, make sure you have
sufficient heat and air within the room. For
towels, use a heated towel rail, even during the
summer months. This ensures towels dry quickly,
and prevents the accumulation of damp. Use
dehumidifiers to eliminate excess moisture from
the air. You should set the humidity level to 55
and the dehumidifier will draw out excess water.
In dark cupboards and corners, use the
dehumidifier wardrobe pouches or boxes to draw in
moisture. In terms of light, theres not
much you can do to introduce more light to the
property, except by using mirrors. Hang a mirror
in dark rooms and hallways to help to increase
light levels.
