  • Public transport-buses, trains, and other forms
    of transport that are available to the public
  • Commuters- People who regularly travel between
    places
  • Rapid Transit system- modern kind of transport
    that moves people quickly

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT
  • 1. TRAIN.
  • There are two types of trains namely the
    metrorail train and the gautrain.
  • 2. Busses
  • We will discuss the 2 types of bus systems in the
    urban areas. The Areyeng that is found in
    Pretoria and the Rea vaya that is found in
    Johannesburg.

TRAINS- METRORAIL TRAIN
1. Metrorail train- A train that carries about
30 000 people a day. The train travels quite
frequently with a set schedule. ADVANTAGES- It is
cheaper It has more stations DISADVANTAGES- Not
punctual Often overcrowded.

TRAINS- GAUTRAIN
  • 2. Gautrain -The Gautrain is situated only in the
    Gauteng province
  • It is known to be the fastest train in Africa
    that carries about 94 000 passengers per day.
  • ADVANTAGES
  • Accommodates disabled people
  • Punctual
  • DISADVANTAGES
  • Has limited number of stations
  • Expensive

BUS
  • South Africa has decided to introduce BRT
    systems rather than other systems because they
    are cheaper and more flexible. We will discuss
    only two of the transit systems namely
  • Rea vaya
  • Areyeng

REA VAYA
  • Rea vaya means we are going.
  • The rea vaya Rapid Bus Transit system runs in
    Johannesburg and was designed to reduce
    congestion and pollution, improve public
    transport, and create jobs.
  • There are about 150 bus stops positioned
    approximately half a kilometre apart.

AREYENG
  • Areyeng means let us go.
  • The Areyeng Rapid Bus Transit system runs in
    Pretoria and was also designed to reduce
    congestion and pollution, improve public
    transport, and create jobs.
  • These buses travel in special bus lanes where
    other vehicles are not allowed in these lanes.
    During rush hour, the buses run every 10 to 15
    minutes.

CONCLUSION
  • These are the types of transport systems that are
    found in the urban areas.
  • Now write a 10 line paragraph telling me which
    type of transport system you would prefer to use
    and why. Include the disadvantages and advantages
    of using that certain transport system that you
    chose.
