Title: FLYING ROBOTS – WHERE DID THEY BEGIN & WHERE WILL THEY END? (1)

FLYING ROBOTS WHERE DID THEY BEGIN WHERE WILL
THEY END?
2
  • Officially, automated drones are referred to as
UAVs or unmanned aerial vehicles, but to you and
me, theyre known simply as flying robots.
  • Originally designed to be used for military
purposes, its only in more modern times that
these flying robots can be seen sitting on the
    shelves of our toy stores.
  • How is a flying robot defined?
  • Flying robots are basically aircraft with no
on-board passengers or pilot, and you can see how
appealing this must have been when thinking in
terms of warfare, with fatalities being reduced
    to a minimum.

3
  • When and how were they first used?
  • Drones were initially dismissed as being too
unreliable when they were first invented and
utilised, and they were rarely used during the
post, World War II era. It wasnt until much
later, in 1982, when the coordinated use of UAVs
in an attack on Syria by the Israeli Air Force,
initiated a new paradigm in warfare. Ever since
then, the military in the US have become the
biggest subscribers to tactical drone warfare,
with other countries in hot pursuit.
  • Many people today, still associate flying robots
with military applications, and often forget (or
are unaware) that the concept of vehicles being
    controlled

4
  • remotely, was the brainchild of none other than
    world renowned Serbian-American inventor, Nikola
Tesla, all the way back in the 1900s. Tesla
referred to his first patent for a UAV as
teleautomation, and the technology he employed
became one of the foundational principles for the
    modern flying robot.
  • How do we continue to use them?
  • While drones continue to be used in modern
warfare, as technology makes it advances, flying
robots have gotten more intelligent and are being
used for many other purposes. The quadcopter has
proven popular among general members of the
public who are looking for a recreational hobby,
and today you can pick up a

5
  • flying robot from any good toy store, often for
less than 50. These are fun, nifty and
affordable, and provided their used within the
FAAs regulations, flying them can be a great
pastime. Many even have WiFi enabled cameras with
live aerial video feeds that stream straight to
your smartphone. The larger, or regular sized
UAVs, are being used for many important purposes
as well as recreational, such as to monitor
wildlife movement (and even track poachers), help
farmers manage their vast land masses more
effectively, and enable realtors to provide
clients with aerial footage of their available
properties/land, or even give them a fly
through tour without them needing to be present.

6
  • What issues do drones present and will they
    always be around?
  • Its not hard to imagine some of the privacy and
security issues that might arise over the use of
the smaller drones, particularly when in the
hands of criminals seeking to burglarise a
property or track someones movements. There are
rules in place to protect you from their misuse,
but catching and prosecuting perpetrators is
    incredibly difficult.
  • On a larger scale, terrorists have been known to
make use of drones, and there is always the
danger of a UAV being flown to close to an
airport, other aircraft or crowded public spaces.

7
  • As far as the future of the flying robot is
concerned, they are certain to become more
sophisticated and capable of carrying out many
important tasks as technology advances, both in
warfare and in other areas of life. In fact, it
would be hard to imagine a life without them now,
and it would be even harder to imagine why they
    would ever disappear?
