Common Photography Mistakes You Didnt Know Were
Ruining Your Pictures
2
Some Good Advice for Photography Buffs
  • When it comes to photography, having a top-notch
camera and advanced accessories isnt enough. It
takes a great deal of knowledge and experience to
    come up with unique pictures.
  • So, if youre a beginner and dont see yourself
getting clicks that wow your viewers, dont
    panic!
  • We have some good advice for photography buffs
who have just started with their device and are
new in the field. Here are some common mistakes
you will likely make in the beginning and should
learn from in order to hone your photography
    skills.

3
Losing Focus on the Main Object
  • With no intention to, you may end up including
things in your frame that takes the attention
away from the main focus in the image.
  • That happens when you give too much attention to
your subject and dont take the time to look
    things around it.

4
Cutting off Parts
  • Often photographers cut off feet of their
subjects or things they are shooting at the edge
of the frame without even realising it. This
happens when you leave too much space over the
top of the subject or thing.
  • If you dont want the entire subject in your
frame, crop your subjects body at the waist.
Also, tilting your camera slightly down when
shooting people will help with the composition.

5
Clicking Photos Facing a Light Source
  • Most photographers, particularly beginners, have
a misconception that taking photos with plenty of
light in front of them is always a great idea.
Here are some tips you certainly need
  • Make sure the sun is behind your (photographers)
back. It works great for landscape shots when the
subject is not necessarily looking at the camera.
  • Avoid having bright sunlight come directly on or
behind the subject of the picture unless you want
    a silhouette.
  • To showcase both your subject and the landscape
around, keep them both under the same lighting
    condition.

6
Centring Everything in the Image
  • One of the most common mistakes beginner
photographers make is they almost cut their
images in half by keeping the horizon line in the
middle of the image. This creates confusion
    around the main subject.
  • So, what should you do instead?
  • Follow the rule of thirds. When shooting
landscapes, keep the horizon line either on the
top or bottom of the frame based on the portion
of the landscape you intend to focus on.
  • When photographing a person, place the subject on
one of the vertical lines on your frame.

7
Overlooking the Background
  • While it is important to focus on the main
subject, you cant ignore the background in your
    frame altogether.
  • Sometimes, photographers focus too much into
capturing their subject that they dont notice
the undergarments draped over the chair, the
neighbourhood child picking his nose and the old
man in his speedo until they see the pictures.
  • Before taking a click, take a quick look around
your subject and ensure theres nothing unsightly
in the background that can ruin your picture.

8
Final Word
  • These were just a few blunders and there could
possibly be countless of them that you will can
make in the beginning. The key is to learn from
these mistakes and experiment with your device,
angles, exposure and other aspects of
    photography.
  • Simon Lee-Steere takes keen interest in
photography and offer valuable advice on the same
through his articles and blog posts.
