1
How to Write a Statement of Purpose for a Job
2
What does a SOP mean?
  • A statement of purpose for a job demonstrates
    persons strengths, competitive abilities,
accomplishments and career aspirations. It is
your personal small presentation of who you are
as a specialist and what with all your experience
and ambitions you can contribute to the company.

3
In a statement of purpose for a job you should
answer further questions
  • Why does this position so interesting for you?
  • Why are you the most suited candidate?
  • Do you have any related to this position job
    experience or education?
  • In what projects have you presented your
    skills?
  • What professional abilities can help you to
    stand out from others?

4
How to start
  • Begin with a sentence that hooks your readers
attention from the first sight. Tell some curious
fact about yourself which presents you as an
interesting and intelligent person. As an
alternative, say some general saying or quote
someone well-known if this is relevant to your
    new role.

5
  • Dont write an opening sentence like I always
wanted to become A because B, C, D. It is so
cliché. Introduce yourself, your motivations and
tell what sparked your desire to work in this
    company.

6
If your statement of purpose couldnt impress
recruiters, it could happen because
  • It begins with some flattering phrase about the
company youre trying to be hired. It is a bad
idea as a recruiter already knows how good his or
    her company is.
  • A SOP is like an autobiography that tells your
whole life from the birth. When a recruiter
reaches important information, his or her
    attention will definitely be lost.

7
  • It is full of personal details (date of birth,
marital status) which are already provided in a
    resume.
  • It starts with silly introduction like with a
bad sense of humor. Show that youre a
professional but not some careless person who
dont care about composing such a piece of
    writing.

8
About skills
  • Avoid clichés like hard-working, strong
    communication skills, possess leadership
skills, team player, partner with other. Be
    specific. Demonstrate concrete achievements,
potential growth within this company, bright
    examples of your talent.

9
  • Even if your work experience is too small, you
can always sell yourself tell about your
interests that have developed great skills
relevant to the position youre applying
  • captain of university football team presents
    leadership
  • volunteering presents you as a proactive
    person
  • visiting theatres, art galleries, etc shows
    intelligence

General tips on how to write a statement of
purpose for a job
  • Be honest. Dont exaggerate in your SOP as the
    truth always comes out.
  • The tone of your writing must be polite,
    professional and positive.

11
  • Back up your statement with examples dont just
say that youre communicative person, show it.
  • Skip generalization and dont be vague. Dont
just list your achievements - give the reader the
quantitative data to back you up.

12
  • A SOP should be short but precise and to the
point. If its said it must be 200 words long,
you must write 200 or fewer words. Nobody will
read a piece of writing with the size of a novel.
    Make those 200 words count!
  • Dont write about your flaws and make your SOP
negative. Present your personality in the best
    light!

13
  • Involve key skills that match up the job
description and help you to stand out from other
    candidates to this position.
  • Tell about your work experience. What skills
youve got from there? Whatve you learned? In
what were you the best? What can you with such an
    experience bring to the company?

14
  • Avoid clichés. Be concrete and interesting. Make
sure that you wont bore your reader. Dont make
    your SOP impersonal and monotonous.
  • Carefully read the job description and use
keywords from there. Show that youre completely
aware of this position and fully ready to all
    duties.

15
  • Avoid slang, colloquialisms, contractions and
    inappropriate language. Be formal and
    professional.
  • The best SOP is written in an active, not a
    passive voice.
  • Be selective. Write only relevant and necessary
    information about yourself.

16
  • Write your SOP by yourself. Dont copy it from
the Internet. It will show that youre lazy and
uninterested person. You can look through some
job statement example but not plagiarized it.

17
  • Dont use hyperbolic claims. You potential
employer wont be impressed when on the interview
you wont be able to prove these claims.
  • Dont upset if your first draft is not ideal. Try
harder and look for some statement of interest
    job application sample.

18
  • Dont be generic. If a recruiter picks your SOP
up and can say Ive already seen something like
that, it is a sign of a poorly written and
    ordinary paper.
  • Be confident. But dont push or demand.

19
  • Edit carefully. Double check your writing. Make
sure it is grammatically correct and flawless.
Break too long sentences into the smaller ones.
Rephrase any clumsy or too wordy sentences into
clear and precise. Read a SOP aloud or ask
someone elses to re-read it for you.
