Notes on Typing Mathematical Papers
2
  • Writing math papers is an essential skill for
mathematicians. It is as important as the ability
to prove theorems. If you want to share your
mathematical knowledge with others, you need to
    write math in words.

3
  • Writing clearly and accurately is something in
what not all students and even professional
mathematicians are good at. It demands a great
attention and scrupulousness. Here are some
helpful notes on how to type math.

4
  • Pay attention to your introduction
  • Define the purpose of your paper. Do it as soon
as possible to not lose your readers. They do not
have a lot of time to read each math papers so
theyre looking in the first sentence something
    that will interest them.

5
  • You may write the perfect work but your
introduction is weak and not catchy. Thats why
your paper will have few readers. Write
informative, clear and to the point opening
sentences without using too much technical jargon.

6
  • Start with the problem and key idea then, write
about theories and what is your attitude towards
them (you want to discredit, prove theyre wrong
or right, etc) say about related work and
clarify the structure of your paper.

7
  • One thing that differs math writing from other
types of paper is using formulas. Dont begin
your sentence with formulas or equations as it
can confuse your reader, especially when the
previous statement ended in a mathematical
symbol. Make your writing beautiful and pleasant
    to read.

8
  • If youre writing formulas, you have two options.
First, you can write hem by hand. But make sure
that your mathematical notation is precise and
legible. Second, you can type formulas in
Microsoft Word using equation editors. Also,
youre welcome to try professional services which
know how to type a formula in word on the highest
    level of quality.

9
  • All equations and formulas must be included in
complete sentences (commas and periods are
required after equations). Typing math equations
in word is not simply so use professional help
    from reliable writing services.
  • Write according to standard notation. Dont mix
    notation and be coherent.

10
  • Too lengthy proof of some theorem must be divided
into short understandable steps, lemmas or
subsections. Try to simplify and dont use big
technical words to sound more grandiose.

11
  • Math demands very clear and precise use of
language so ensure that your English is perfect.
Write directly and dont use too complicated
phrases in the meaning of which youre not sure
    even by yourself.

12
  • Be coherent. All steps are logical to you, but
not for your readers. Thats why explain each of
your action. Why youre using some formula, why
this theorem is here, what all equations mean,
etc. The confused reader is not a sign of a good
    math paper.

13
  • Be precise. Careless explanations are not
excusable. Besides, your paper can be read by
people whose English is a second language so
remember that they wont get slang, technical
    jargon or colloquialisms.

14
  • Make your mathematics typing clear and totally
    professional. You shouldnt use unfamiliar
abbreviations or shorthand forms if youre not
sure your readers will understand. Use correct
    grammar and spelling.

15
  • Make sure your math paper flows logically and
    smoothly.
  • In your conclusion dont repeat the introduction.
Write about what new you work has brought, what
new questions have arisen for future research and
    so on.

16
  • If youre quoting, give references, except for
well-known theorems such as Pythagoras theorem.
If your references are incorrect or the reader
cant locate them, it is a sigh your inaccuracy
and poorly written math paper. So, make it right!

17
  • You should back up your arguments with references
but do not cite well-known and standard results.
If youre using non-published papers, give the
    link.

18
  • If youve finished writing, check, check and
check your math paper! You dont want some silly
grammar error to spoil readers impression about
    your work.

19
  • Read your math paper aloud, even formulas and
equations. If something doesnt make sense,
    rewrite it.
