Dry Needling
7
Dry Needling
  • Dry Needling involves inserting an acupuncture
needle into a trigger point and is typically used
to treat the pain associated with injuries.
  • A trigger point is a tender spot in a tight band
of muscle which causes pain when pressed or
    squeezed.
  • They often occur as a result of neuromuscular
dysfunction and in areas of musculoskeletal
    stress.
  • Everyone has trigger points but when they are
deactivated it can allow for more efficient
movement, increased flexibility and lead to a
    decrease in pain.

8
Dry Needling
  • Dry needling is an invasive procedure which
involves inserting a thin filament needle into
the skin and muscle directly at a Myofascial
    trigger point.
  • The evidence base dry needling in various areas
    of physiotherapy, has increased substantially
    over the past decade.
  • Dry needling can be used for a variety of
    musculoskeletal problems.
  • Neuromuscular dysfunction and imbalances are
thought to be a primary contributing factor to
    the symptoms.

9
Dry Needling
  • In particular, research has grown to provide
evidence-based support in the treatment of acute
and chronic back pain, chronic neck pain, tension
type and migraine headaches, pelvic girdle pain,
knee osteoarthritis, lateral elbow pain and
    shoulder conditions.

10
Dry Needling
  • The treatment of muscles has the greatest effect
on reducing pain mechanisms in the nervous
    system.
  • Most people claim to feel minimal pain or
discomfort during dry needling and describe it as
a completely different sensation to needles they
    have experienced in the past.
  • Our Physiotherapists are trained in prong dry
needling to clients on if required to help them
    with their pain.
