  • Canker Sore is a type of ulcer that usually
    appears inside the mouth and causes constant pain
    and discomfort. Canker Sores are more common
    among people between the ages of 15-25. Canker
    sores are also known as aphthous ulcers. Canker
    Sore looks white or yellow and surrounded by red,
    inflamed soft tissue. There are two types of
    Canker sores Simple canker sore which usually
    appears only three to four times a year and
    Complex canker sores which occur more frequently
    and takes more time to heal.

Causes of Canker Sores 
  • One of the most common causes of appearance of
    mouth ulcers is a viral infection. Viral
    infections are often linked with conditions such
    as allergies, inflammatory bowel disease,
    nutritional deficiency and weakened immune
    system, which may trigger the development of
    ulcers in the mouth. Chances of developing mouth
    ulcers also increase if someone has a family
    history of canker sores. Other common causes of
    canker sores are 
  • Mouth injury
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Food allergy
  • Chronic vitamin or mineral deficiency
  • Drugs
  • Damaged lining of the mouth

Symptoms
  • Canker sores cause constant pain and discomfort
    while talking or eating. Some common symptoms of
    canker sores are 
  • Re-occurrence of mouth ulcers
  • Sores inside the lips, inner side of the cheeks,
    sores on tongue and upper portion of the mouth
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation in mouth
  • Sores that are spreading
  • Bleeding from the mouth
  • Fever
  • Lack of appetite
  • Constant tingling in the mouth

Diagnosis of Canker sores
  • A doctor can diagnose canker sore by simply
    examining it. After that, a he may order
    a diagnostic test which usually includes a blood
    test. A blood test will help the doctor in
    detecting if there is any hormonal imbalance or a
    vitamin or mineral deficiency. The diagnosis of
    canker sore will help in determining the suitable
    treatment.

Treatments
  • Usually, symptoms of canker sore often disappear
    on its own in one or two weeks and there is no
    requirement of a medical treatment. Treatment of
    canker sore may include 
  • Brush and floss the teeth regularly to prevent
    the risk of developing bacterial infection.
  • Avoid sore, acidic, and spicy food, which may
    trigger the irritation in your mouth.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables to keep your digestive
    system healthy.
  • Use antimicrobial mouthwash after brushing. It
    will kill bacteria in your mouth.
  • Apply doctor recommended ulcer gel on the
    affected areas.
  • Have ice-cream or yogurt to cool down the
    inflammation due ulcers.
