rate of 6 as luxury brands were starting to see
a slow recovery from the previous year. The
recovery of luxury brands in the domestic market
was largely due to terrorist attacks in France,
which caused many Chinese consumers to avoid the
shopping destination and opting to consume luxury
brands domestically instead. Additionally, with
the depreciation of the Chinese yuan against the
Hong Kong dollar, Japanese yen and US dollar,
this greatly reduced the flow of Chinese tourists
to these destinations where they would purchase
luxury goods. Consequently, this drove the
domestic demand for luxury goods. Moreover, with
the Chinese governments intervention to curb
cross border commerce due to the rise of the grey
market in China, it was increasingly difficult
for consumers to purchase luxury goods overseas
for resale purposes in the domestic market.
