Class 9th Science  Matter in our surroundings
  • Matter in our surroundings is the first Chapter
of Class 9th science  and one of the very
    interesting chapter.
  • What is Matter? How do we classify Matter? These
are the first question that strikes in the mind
of a Class 9th science  student.
  • So if we have to define Matter we will say-
  • Matter is anything which occupies space and has
    mass.

  • So, anything that we see, feel, touch around us
is matter. A major requirement for anything to be
categorized as a matter is that it should occupy
    space and have mass.
  • On the basis of physical and chemical properties,
    Matter is classified as below

  • Characteristics of Particle of Matter
  • Matter Particles are very very small-Gulaal
particles are very small even if we drop a pinch
of gulaal in a drum, entire water colour changes,
hence we can say that the particles of matter are
    very very small.
  • Matter Particles have space between them-If we
take a glass of water and dissolve a spoon of
sugar, then the water level will not change, this
shows that there are spaces between water
particles in which sugar particles accommodates.
  • Matter Particles are constantly moving-If we
light an incense stick in one room than the
fragrance spreads to other rooms as well, hence
we can say that matter particles are moving
    constantly.

  • Matter Particles attract each other-If we will
try to break sugar cube and iron nail with force.
Sugar cube, will break easily iron nail will not
break even after applying force. This shows that
the force of attraction is very strong.
  • Note-Force of attraction is maximum in the solid
particles and minimum in the gaseous particles.
