Jaisalmer, 'Golden City', is a symbol of the
charm of a sandy desert with royal palaces of
Rajasthan and fighting camels. This
world-renowned tourist destination is situated in
the middle of the Great Thar Desert. Along with
serving as the administrative headquarters of
Jaisalmer district, this golden city is just 575
km from the state capital Jaipur. The city has
been named after the founder of the city Rao
Jaisal, who ruled Jaisalmer during the 12th
century.

- JAISALMER FORT
- Jaisalmer Fort is considered as the glory of
Jaisalmer and it is located in the center of the
city. It is also known as 'Sonar Fort' or 'Golden
Fort' because this yellow sandstone fort shines
like gold at sunset. It was built in 1156 AD on
the top of Trikura Hill by a Bhatti Rajput ruler
Jaisal. Jaisalmer Fort is a residential complex
of many beautiful havelis or houses, temples and
soldiers and traders. Jaisalmer Fort is
considered as the glory of Jaisalmer and it is
located in the center of the city. It is also
known as 'Sonar Fort' or 'Golden Fort' because
this yellow sandstone fort shines like gold at

- PATWON KI HAVELI
- The Haveli of Patwon is situated near the
Patwa campus and is Jaisalmer's first mansion.
There are five havelis in the entire complex,
which was built by Guman Chand Patwa in 1805 for
their five sons. It took 50 years to build this
yellow sandstone building. At present, the Office
of the Archaeological Survey of India and the
State Arts and Crafts Department are located
here.The tourists can reach this monument by a
rickshaw from Jaisalmer city.

- SALIM SINGH KI HAVELI
- Salim Singh's haveli is located near
Jaisalmer railway station. This beautiful
building was built by Salim Singh in 1815 AD. It
is also called Shipmahal because its front part
looks like a ship. The roof of the building is
covered with archers and blue hawks. The tourists
can see the terrace decorated with carved
brackets, which looks like a peacock.

- BADA BAGH
- The big garden is a huge park famous for its
royal monuments or umbrellas which were
constructed by various Bhatti rulers. Among all,
the tomb of Raja Maharajal Jait Singh is the
oldest monument. This place is located 6
kilometers from Jaisalmer city. In addition to
the monuments inside the park, tourists can also
see the Jaitaar tank, the Jaita dam and a
Govardhan pillar. The solid pieces of stones were
used in the construction of both the tank and the
tank.

- GADASESAR LAKE
- Gadasesar lake is an artificial water
reservoir which was built by King Maehawal Gadsi
during the 14th century. It is a rainwater lake,
which was the main source of water during that
period. There are many small temples situated on
the shore of Lake. Tourist can see many migratory
birds on the lake. On their way from Bharatpur
Bird Sanctuary, these birds stop for some time on
the lake.
