Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt
  • A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a medical
device that relieves the brain from pressure
caused due to accumulation of fluid.
    Ventriculoperitoneal shunting is a surgical
procedure that uses a VP shunt to primarily treat
a condition called hydrocephalus. This condition
occurs when the brains ventricles are
    excessively accumulated with cerebrospinal fluid
    (CSF).
  • When the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid is
disturbed, the buildup of this fluid creates
pressure on the brains tissues, which is so
harmful it can lead to brain damage. Doctors
surgically place VP shunts inside one of the
ventricles of the brain to divert this fluid away
from it and restore normal flow by absorption of
the fluid. It is performed for both diagnostic
    reasons and therapeutic reasons.

3
Indication
  • Ventriculoperitoneal shunting is recommended
for those who suffer from hydrocephalus. Anyone
can develop hydrocephalus but it is most likely
to occur in babies and older adults. To confirm
the diagnosis of hydrocephalus imaging tests
should be done by a doctor. If you suffer from
any of the following symptoms of hydrocephalus
then you may need ventriculoperitoneal shunting
  • If you experience headaches, seizures,
    irritability, excessive sleepiness, incontinence,
poor appetite, regression, memory loss, poor
    coordination or impaired vision.
  • If you have cysts, tumors, or inflammation in the
brain which can cause blockages and impede normal
    flow of cerebrospinal fluid.

4
During Procedure
  • The medical team will perform the surgery in
sterile conditions under general anaesthesia. The
operation usually takes less than an hour. It
    involves the following steps
  • A small incision will be made in the scalp. A
small hole will then be drilled in the skull.
  • A tiny opening will be made in the protective
coverings of the brain. These openings
accommodate a tube called the catheter which
passes into a ventricle in the brain.
  • The end of the catheters will be tunnelled under
the skin and carefully placed in the appropriate
receiving cavity usually in the abdomen.
  • The doctor will then make two or three small
incisions usually above or behind the ear to
place the shunt valve. This valve connects to
both catheters. The valve opens when extra
pressure builds up in the brain allowing the
excess fluid to drain through the catheter into
    the belly or chest area.
  • You will be taken from the operating room to a
recovering area and then moved to a hospital room

5
Pre Procedure
  • If the procedure is not an emergency and it is a
planned surgery then there are a few
pre-procedures you need to follow before
undergoing this treatment. In order to help
prevent infection, you may be asked to shave some
of the hair on your head and wash head and body
with specially prescribed soap and shampoo.
Intake medicines and tablets that your doctor
prescribed with a sip of water before the
    surgery.
  • It is very important to inform your health care
    provider about any medicines, supplements,
vitamins, or herbs you are taking. Follow the
instructions about limited eating or drinking as
provided by your doctor. Your medical team will
cover you with sterile linen to maintain a
    sterile environment throughout the treatment.

More info
  • Infection of the shunt is most common within the
first few weeks of a shunt placement. Follow the
instructions of your health care provider on how
to take care of the shunt at home. This may
include taking medicine to prevent infection.
  • The shunt may stop working at one point.
Therefore regular checkup is important. For
children, the shunt may need to be repositioned
    as they grow older.
  • The cost of the shunt surgery can approximately
vary from 1 lakh to 3 lakhs depending on the
hospital facilities and the required shunt chosen
    by doctor.
