What is Yom Kippur?
  • Yom Kippur is considered the most important
holiday in the Jewish faith. It falling in the
month of Tishrei and also known as the Day of
Atonement. It marks the culmination of the 10
Days of Awe, a period of introspection and
repentance that follows Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish
    New Year.

4
Yom Kippur Preparations
  • Yom Kippur is specified for forgiveness and is
also the climax of the Ten Days and nights of
Repentance. It really is cause for positive
pleasure in G-d's mercy and forgiveness, but it
    addittionally requires reflective planning.
Traditionally, there are numerous activities that
people engage in through the days before Yom
    Kippur.
  • Aseres Yemei Teshuva
  • Tzedakah
  • Kaparos
  • Erev Yom Kippur

Aseres Yemei Teshuva
Tzedakah
  • The first day of Rosh Hashana is the to begin the
Ten Days and nights of Repentance, and Yom Kippur
is the previous. The ancients trained that of
these ten times, Teshuvah (repentance), Tefilah
(prayer) and Tzedakah (charity) are specially
effective and much more commonly accepted in
    heaven.
  • Charity is one of the three activities described
in the davening of Yom Kippur that eliminates an
bad decree. Actually, halachic options discuss
the custom of offering charity to the indegent on
both Erev Rosh Hashanah and Erev Yom Kippur.
Through the entire Ten Times of Repentance, we
make an effort to add good deeds, and Tzedakah is
one of the biggest mitzvos a Jew can do.

Kaparos
Erev Yom Kippur
  • This traditional ritual is achieved by revolving
a rooster around one's brain while reciting a
text message that says that the rooster will be
slaughtered and the average person will check out
    a good extended life.
  • Erev Yom Kippur is an especially special day.
It's not only each day of planning for any
occasion, it is any occasion itself. There's a
special need to partake of any festive meal. As
the Torah requires us to fast, it also needs us
to rejoice this holy day, also to prepare
ourselves literally for the fast day.

7
Yom Kippur Rituals
  • Yom Kippur is the only fast that is biblically
mandated. Due to its severity, only the most
urgent circumstances allow for its violation. A
competent halachic authority should be consulted
in all such matters. The other four injunctions
    are rabbinic.

Yom Kippur Prayers
  • Yom Kippur is the one day completely focused on
prayer. For just one day, we emulate the angels,
abstaining from physical desires, gives way to
religious introspection. We think about our
defects, and resolve to fix our ways. Usually Yom
Kippur has been one of the happiest times of the
entire year since it is whenever we are forgiven,
so when we get started anew with a clean slate.
