What is Arthritis Management ? Arthritis
Management The focus of treatment for arthritis
is to control pain, minimize joint damage, and
improve or maintain function and quality of
life. Treatment Goals To protect the joint from
further damages. Provide pain relief. Prevent
disabilities. Increase functional
capacity. Improve flexibility and
strength. Encourage regular exercise. Improve
general fitness.
4Understanding Arthritis Pain Whether its dull,
sharp, burning or a pressure that could only be
described as having a boa constrictor squeezing
one of your joints, chronic arthritis pain is all
too common. For the approximately 50 million
Americans with some form of arthritis or a
related disease, pain is a wily and persistent
nemesis. Chronic Pain Arthritis For millions of
Americans who have some form of arthritis or a
related disease, pain is chronic, or
long-lasting. Technically, pain is considered
chronic when it lasts three to six months or
longer, but arthritis pain can last a
lifetime. Fatigue Arthritis If the pain is the
most common and troublesome symptom of arthritis,
fatigue runs a close second. Often the two are
closely related. Dealing with pain day to day can
wear you down and cause fatigue. Being fatigued,
in turn, can worsen pain and make it more
difficult to manage. Joint Protection
Arthritis Arthritis aches and pain can affect
your daily life. But there are simple ways to
protect your joints, reduce strain and improve
how you function each day. Arthritis Flares If
you have arthritis, youve probably experienced a
flare at one time or another your disease seems
to be well under control for a while, then
suddenly your joints become inflamed and
painful.
5Total Knee Replacement Surgery
Total knee replacement In this procedure,
the knee is replaced with an artificial joint. It
requires a major surgery and hospitalization. The
surgeon replaces the damaged portions of
the knee with plastic and metal parts. The
benefits of Same-Day-Both-Knee Surgery are that
it takes you half the time to fully recover from
the knee surgery. Although you are out of bed and
walking on the second day after surgery and
climbing stairs 5 days after surgery, it takes
approximately 3 months to fully recover from this
surgery and have complete freedom to do what you
like.
6Knee replacement is technically demanding, needs
careful planning and also a variety of add-on in
terms of implant accessories will need to be made
available in the operating theater before
commencing surgery. We routinely perform surgery
at our hospital for those patients who need it.
Other common complication we see is a fracture of
the bone near the site of implant, on the rare
occasion when a patient falls down on
landing/twisting on the operated leg This needs
special plating technique with the Locking
compression plate technique. If you are planning
to do one knee surgery at a time, this means it
will take (33) 6 months for full recovery!. Of
course, not everyone is fit enough for both knee
surgery. But if you are a fit person, then it
makes sense to have both knees operated at the
same time. Most of my patients prefer both knee
surgery on the same day and if they are fit I
offer it to them.
Knee replacement, also called arthroplasty, is a
surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by
arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to
cap the ends of the bones that form
the knee joint, along with the kneecap. This
surgery may be considered for someone who has
severe arthritis or a severe knee injury. A
Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure
whereby the diseased knee joint is replaced with
artificial material. The knee is a hinge joint
which provides motion at the point where the
thigh meets the lower leg. The thighbone (or
femur) abuts the large bone of the lower leg
(tibia) at the knee joint. Imagine yourself
pushing a fully loaded vehicle which has flat
tyres. You would need considerable force to make
it move. Same happens to an overweight person
with an Arthritic Knee Joint. Their knee joints
feel stiff and are deformed and hence the person
needs more physical energy to get up from a
sitting position, walk, climb stairs and
negotiate slopes.
7Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a
doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint
with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial
joint often made from metal and plastic
components. It usually is done when all other
treatment options have failed to provide adequate
pain relief. Hip replacement surgery is a

all other treatment options have failed to
provide adequate pain relief. The procedure
should relieve a painful hip joint, making
walking easier. What Happens During Hip
Replacement Surgery? Hip replacement surgery can
be performed traditionally or by using what is
considered a minimally-invasive technique. The
main difference between the two procedures is the
size of the incision. During standard hip
replacement surgery, you are given general
anesthesia to relax your muscles and put you into
a temporary deep sleep. This will prevent you
from feeling any pain during the surgery or have
any awareness of the procedure. A spinal
anesthetic may be given to help prevent pain as
an alternative.

The doctor will then make a cut along the side of
the hip and move the muscles connected to the top
of the thighbone to expose the hip joint. Next,
the ball portion of the joint is removed by
cutting the thighbone with a saw. Then an
artificial joint is attached to the thighbone
using either cement or a special material that
allows the remaining bone to attach to the new
joint. The doctor then prepares the surface of
the hipbone removing any damaged cartilage
and attaches the replacement socket part to the
hipbone. The new ball part of the thighbone is
then inserted into the socket part of the hip. A
drain may be put in to help drain any fluid. The
doctor then reattaches the muscles and closes the
incision.
9What is Total Partial Joint Replacement
Total Joint Replacement Total joint
replacement is a surgical procedure performed to
replace the damaged joint with the artificial
implants. Total joint replacement is usually
performed when the joint is severely damaged by
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis,
post-traumatic arthritis or vascular necrosis.
In a normal joint, the joint surface is covered
by a smooth articular surface that allows for
smooth movement within the joint, whereas in
arthritic joint the cartilage is gradually worn
out causing the articular ends of the bones to
rub against one another leading to pain and
restricted range of motion. Total joint
replacement may be considered in patients with
severe pain which is not relieved through
medications, injections, physical therapy, or
other treatments. The goal of the surgery is to
relieve pain and restore the normal functioning
of the joint. Total joint replacement can be
performed through an open or minimally invasive
approach.
10In the open approach, an incision is made over
the affected joint to expose the joint. The
arthritic part of the joint is removed and
prepared to receive the artificial components.
The artificial components are fixed in place. The
muscles and tendons are then repaired and the
skin is closed. A minimally invasive approach has
been developed in recent years where surgery is
performed through one or two smaller incisions
rather than the single long incision as in the
traditional approach. Advantages of the newer
approach are lesser muscle dissection, minimal
pain, quicker recovery, and faster
rehabilitation. Minimally Invasive Joint

Arthroplasty Partial joint replacement is a
minimally invasive procedure during which only
the diseased or damaged joint surfaces are
removed and replaced with artificial surfaces,
while leaving the healthy parts of the joint
intact. Partial joint replacement remains as a
sole treatment option when all possible
conservative means of treatment such as rest,
anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy
have been ineffective in resolving your
symptoms. While the procedure may relieve your
pain and other symptoms, there may also be
associated risks and complications as with any
major surgery. Potential risks and complications
that may occur following partial joint
replacement include infection, wearing of
implants, dislocation, fractures in the bone,
stiffness, damage to the blood vessels and
nerves.
11What is Orthopaedic Surgeon ?
An Orthopaedic surgeon, or orthopaedic surgeon,
is a surgeon who has been educated and trained in
the diagnosis and preoperative, operative, and
postoperative treatment of diseases and injuries
of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic
surgeons work closely with other health care
providers and often serve as consultants to other
physicians. Orthopaedic surgeons often are
involved in education (e.g., medical school
professors) or research. They may practice in an
orthopaedic or multi-specialty group, or in a
solo practice.
12Orthopaedic surgeons treat a number of conditions
that affect the bones, joints, muscles,
ligaments, tendons, and nerves. These conditions
include the following These conditions include
the following Arthritis Bone tumors Cerebral
palsy Club foot, knock knees, bow legs, bunions,
hammertoes Dislocations Fractures, sprains, and
strains Muscle, ligament, and tendon
damage Osteoporosis Spine disorders (e.g.,
sciatica, scoliosis, ruptured disc) Who is an
Orthopaedic Surgeon? An orthopaedic surgeon is a
physician devoted to the diagnosis, treatment,
prevention and rehabilitation of injuries,
disorders and diseases of the bodys
musculoskeletal system. This system includes
bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and
tendons. While orthopaedic surgeons are familiar
with all aspects of the musculoskeletal system,
many orthopaedists specialize in certain areas,
such as the foot and ankle, hand, shoulder and
elbow, spine, hip or knee. Orthopaedic surgeons
may also choose to focus on specific fields like
paediatrics, trauma, reconstructive surgery,
oncology (bone tumours) or sports medicine.
