Residential Painting Tips

  • Painting a home or residential area can have its
own set of challenges, however without following
some basic guidelines you may end up with one big
mess in the end. The following tips aim to give
you the information you need to avoid such an
outcome and to help you paint in the best ways
possible. Lets begin with the first tip on our
    list

3
  • If you want to avoid lap marks, you must follow
through and roll the entire height of your wall
with a wet edge. This will help you create an
uninterrupted line all the way. The worst thing
you can do is stop the rolling midway and
then begin again, as this will inevitably create
these unpleasant lap marks which simply take
forever to deal with and an even greater number
    of coats.

4
  • Long, even strokes or rolling is the best way to
    avoid them completely.
  • For a consistent color without any variations you
should mix the cans of paint in a very large
    bucket.

6
  • This will give you a chance to deal with only
a single source of paint for your needs instead
of remixing new ones which may differ in hues
    from the previous ones.

7
  • The best way to go about painting the room is to
start with the trim due to gravitys hold on the
paint youll use. Doing so and then protecting it
with tape will be the best way to do it. Once you
are done painting the walls you should keep in
mind that paint doesnt exactly dry right away
and that some of it will flow down the wall and
    over the wall.

8
  • That means you cant rip off the tape as you may
damage the paint on the wall. Carefully cut it
away with a box cutter to minimize the damage.
Waiting for about 24 hours for the paint to
dry completely is the perfect time to do that.

9
  • Make sure you check whether the paint is
completely dry. You dont want to try to cut
gummy paint as you will mess up everything and
youll have to fix it later.

10
  • If you want to avoid the unpleasant side-effects
of a blotchy finish, you should make sure you do
some priming and texturing beforehand. Although
the color of the paint will be uniform when
youre done it is often that it will also be
    lacking a proper sheen.

11
  • If that happens the cracks and holes in the
wall might be the problem, unless they were
patched before your paint job. This is where
primering comes in, smoothing out these patches
and eliminating the differences between them.

  • Something else that must be done is to clean up
the walls before you apply any paint. That will
greatly help them form a stronger bond so they
wont peel off when you are done with the
process. You can degloss or clean the
wall depending on the type of paint youre
planning to use, however that largely depends on
what paint was underneath to begin with.
