14Hearing the Word Genesis 820-22 (CEB) 20 Â Noah
built an altar to the LORD. He took some of the
clean large animals and some of the clean birds,
and placed entirely burned offerings on the
altar. 21 Â The LORD smelled the pleasing scent,
and the LORD thought to himself, I will not curse
the fertile land anymore because of human beings
since the ideas of the human mind are evil from
their youth. I will never again destroy every
living thing as I have done. 22 Â As long as the
earth exists, seedtime and harvest, cold and hot,
summer and autumn, day and night will not cease.
15Hearing the Word Genesis 98-17 (CEB) 8 Â God
said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 Â "I am
now setting up my covenant with you, with your
descendants, 10 Â and with every living being
with youwith the birds, with the large animals,
and with all the animals of the earth, leaving
the ark with you. 11 Â I will set up my covenant
with you so that never again will all life be cut
off by floodwaters. There will never again be a
flood to destroy the earth." 12 Â God said, "This
is the symbol of the covenant that I am drawing
up between me and you and every living thing with
you, on behalf of every future generation. 13 Â I
have placed my bow in the clouds it will be the
symbol of the covenant between me and the earth.
14 Â When I bring clouds over the earth and the
bow appears in the clouds, 15 Â I will remember
the covenant between me and you and every living
being among all the creatures. Floodwaters will
never again destroy all creatures. 16 Â The bow
will be in the clouds, and upon seeing it I will
remember the enduring covenant between God and
every living being of all the earth's creatures."
17 Â God said to Noah, "This is the symbol of the
covenant that I have set up between me and all
creatures on earth."
16Discussion Questions
- Can God be manipulated by the quality of our
worship or our supplications? If God in fact
changes, what causes that change to occur? (pp.
17-18) - Does the specific response to the Flood leave the
way open for other forms of world destruction?
Is life in the world vulnerable to the natural
ecological consequences of peoples action? (pp.
18-19) - Is the creation of the rainbow an add-on
phenomenon to commemorate the establishment of
the covenant or an association that God makes to
something previously created? How important is it
that God expressed this covenant in a visually
significant symbol? (pp. 19-20) - How is the gift of memory a sustaining element in
the faith experience? In what ways does the
narrative on pp. 20-21 point to the security of
Gods plan for humankinds deliverance of Gods
people? - In what ways has God sustained you when you were
threatened by forces of existence that you could
not control? What are personal symbols that
cause you to remember Gods grace? (pp. 21-22)
