  • The human eye is known to be one of the most
complicated organs of the body. The muscles that
control the eye are known to be the most active
    muscle in the body.
  • Light is focused mainly by the cornea. As the
light rays fall on the photoreceptor cells,
changes occur in the pigments they contain.
  • These are transmitted through a chain of neurons
to the ganglion cells (a type of neuron located
near the inner surface of eyes retina) which
carry the impulses to the visual cortex of the
    brain.
  • There they are processed, and the object becomes
    visible by the eye.

  • Most people have eye problems at one point or
    other.
  • Some are minor issues and easily treatable at
home while some others require specialist care.
  • Whatever the issue, eye health is of extreme
importance. Following are some of the common eye
    problems-
  • Cataract In this condition ones eye's natural
lens gets cloudy. The lens is mainly made up of
water and protein its the arrangement of
protein which keeps the lens clear and lets
light pass through it. But as the process of
aging takes place, the protein may clump together
and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This
is the cataract. A cataract develops slowly over
the years. The main symptom is a blurry vision.
This condition is treatable by an
Ophthalmologist. The cloudy lens can be replaced
with a clear, artificial lens and is a safe
    procedure.

  • Amblyopia Also known as the lazy eye is a
condition where the vision in one or both eyes
does not develop properly during childhood. It is
one of the most common reasons of vision
impairment in children. In amblyopia, the vision
of one of the eyes is reduced because the eye and
the brain are not working properly. The symptoms
include misaligned eyes, squinting one eye,
bumping into objects or other signs of poor depth
perception, head tilting, and double vision. If
this condition is detected in the early stages of
childhood (about 1-3 years), its easily
treatable. But if it is recognized in the later
stages (about 9-10 years) it gets more arduous to
treat and the child could end up losing their
    vision permanently.

  • Glaucoma A group of eye conditions which can
damage eye's optic nerve usually due to high eye
pressure and cause blindness. The two major types
of Glaucoma are Open angle and Closed angle.
Open-angle is a chronic condition which
progresses slowly without the person noticing
vision loss until the disease is very advanced.
Closed-angle usually appears suddenly and is
quite painful. This condition cannot be cured but
can be treated with eye drops, medication, and
    surgery.

  • Refractive Errors Refractive errors like
    Hyperopia (farsightedness) and Myopia
    (nearsightedness), Astigmatism and Presbyopia are
one of the most frequent eye problems. Hyperopia
is a condition where a distant object can be
perceived more clearly than the near objects. In
Myopia, close objects appear clearly, but far
ones don't. Astigmatism is where vision is
distorted at all distances. A common imperfection
in the eye's curvature. Presbyopia occurs between
ages 4050 years. In this condition, there is a
loss of the ability to focus up close and
inability to read letters and the need to hold
newspaper farther away to see clearly. These
conditions can generally be corrected by
eyeglasses, contact lenses, or in some cases
    surgery

7
  • Strabismus In this condition, the eyes don't
look in exactly the same direction at the same
time. Causes of strabismus can include nerve
injury or dysfunction of the muscles controlling
the eye. Strabismus can cause the eyes to cross
in (esotropia) or turn out (exotropia).
Fortunately, this condition is curable with help
of special eyewear, use of an eye patch and
    rarely surgery.

  • Most of the information is captured in our brain
is through our eyes. The power of eyesight is a
blessing to us and hence its important to take
good care of it. Smoking could create problems
like cataracts, damage to the optic nerve and
    age-related macular degeneration, a condition
which can lead to loss of vision and so is best
to avoid. Protecting eye with sunglasses or
safety goggles during activities is important.
Getting regular eye exams from an optometrist or
ophthalmologist is a critical part of maintaining
    your overall health.
