THE BEST DRIVES IN THE UK
2
INTRODUCTION
We have more than 200,000 miles of road in the
UK, and amongst all of that there are some
spectacular drives. Your car doesnt just have to
get you from A to B sometimes its fun to just
drive, taking in the sights and enjoying the
journey. Here are some of the best drives you can
take in the UK, from short 15 mile trips to
longer ones of 500 miles
3
The Brecon Beacons, Wales
4
The Brecon Beacons, Wales
The Brecon Beacons gives us Black Mountain Pass,
which winds its way from Llandovery to
Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen. The route was used in Top Gear,
and for the best views its worth taking the
journey from north to south. Its a short drive
little more than 20 miles, but it can still take
nearly hour (especially if you want to take in
those views). Its also worth lingering in the
Brecon Beacons for a day or so, and if you fancy
another drive try the A470 that runs through the
park.
5
Powys, Wales
6
Powys, Wales
Abergwesyn Pass in Wales is a particularly
beautiful drive. Abergwesyn Road covers about 20
miles between Abergwesyn and Tregar. Its a short
drive, taking only a little more than 30 minutes.
Also known as The Devils Staircase, its a steep
route that turns back on itself a number of
times, so drive with care. As well as the rise
and fall of the land around you, youll find
quaint villages on the route, and the Llyn
Brianne reservoir is a great place to pause a
while and take it all in.
7
The Peak District, England
8
The Peak District, England
In the Peak District, England, Snake Pass crosses
the Pennines in Derbyshire. Despite the twists
and turns of this winding journey, Snake Pass is
not named after the serpent but rather the Snake
Inn which youll find on the route. At just over
40 miles, it shouldnt take much longer than an
hour to enjoy this drive. Youll experience
moorland and forest, as well as the impressive
Ladybower Reservoir, and with wonderful views of
the National Trusts High Peak Estate its well
worth your time.
9
Somerset, England
10
Somerset, England
Just outside Bristol, deep in the West Country,
the 15 mile route through the limestone of
Cheddar Gorge provides a stunning half hour
drive. With massive cliff faces either side, the
aptly named Cliff Road follows a route that
twists and turns but also offers long sweeping
bends through some memorable scenic countryside.
11
The Road to the Isles, Scotland
12
The Road to the Isles, Scotland
This 150 mile route follows the same path the old
cattle drovers used. Beginning at Loch Lomond, it
passes over the biggest peat bog wilderness in
Britain, takes in the sands of Arisaig, and ends
at Mallaig. But if its a shorter trip youre
after, why not simply enjoy the 45 miles or so
that is the Fort William to Mallaig section?
Youd start beside the breath-taking Ben Nevis,
highest peak in the UK, exploring a route that
includes locations used in Harry Potter!

Scotlands North Coast 500
14
Scotlands North Coast 500
For a rugged route around and through Scotland,
the North Coast 500 will take you away from urban
distraction and into the majestic beauty of the
Scottish countryside. Known as Scotlands Route
66, it boasts more than 500 miles of travel, so
allow yourself a week to take it all in.
15
Northern Irelands Causeway Coastal Drive
16
Northern Irelands Causeway Coastal Drive
Why go from A to B when you can go from B to L?
Belfast to Londonderry, that is 195 miles of
Irish coast. With its rise and fall of steep
cliff paths, the caves, bridges, the twists and
turns, the striking beauty of the Giants
Causeway, its well worth setting aside at least
3 days to make the most of it, perhaps more if
you like the occasional detour. Game of Thrones
fans, for example, might want to add a few more
locations to the journey, such as the Dark Hedges
or Ballintoy harbour...

What to take
Its always best to be prepared, so here are a
few essentials for any road trip   Phone charger
(especially if you use your phone for
navigation!) First aid kit (hopefully youll
never need it!) Blanket A decent playlist of
music Plenty of water and snacks are essential
whats a road trip without food?   And of course,
ensure your car is in good travel health check
the tyres, oil, water, and top up the tank!
