Crowning or Capping a Tooth
  • Crowns and bridges are the most usual dental
    restoration work in dentistry
  • A Crown is a cap or covering for a tooth. It is
used when your tooth is discoloured, cracked or
broken, heavily filled or if fillings have been
    lost.
  • Capping or crowning a tooth will usually consist
    of two to three visits.
  • When would I need a crown?
  • To cover discoloured or worn teeth
  • Replacement of a large filling
  • To stop a tooth from further cracking or
    fracturing
  • To anchor a bridge replacing a missing tooth
  • After root canal treatment

How do Crowns Work?
  • Upon the first visit, your tooth will be prepared
    to receive the new crown.
  • Your tooth will first be shaped to fit inside the
new cap or crown. This may involve some drilling
to give your tooth an even shape.
  • The tooth along with the surrounding area will be
prepared with a numbing injection. If the tooth
has very little structure left, the tooth may
have to be lifted up by filling it with
additional material, rather than just filed down,
    to support the crown.
  • After tooth preparation is completed, an
impression of your tooth is taken, either with
    reliable putty-like impression materials or
digitally and then are sent off to the dental
laboratory where the impressions will be used to
create the model of your tooth for creating the
    crown.

How Long do Crowns Last?
  • While crowns can last a lifetime, they do
sometimes come loose or fall out.
  • The most important step you can take to ensure
the longevity of your crown or bridge is to
    practice good oral hygiene.
  • Keep your gums and teeth healthy by Brushing with
fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing
daily. Also, visit your dentist and hygienist
    regularly for checkups and professional
    cleanings.
  • To prevent damage to your new crown or bridge,
avoid chewing hard foods, like ice or other hard
    objects.
