How Many Phone Companies Are There In Australia?
  • 75 of people are unaware of their options when
it comes to phone companies and plans.

  • So what ? Consider smaller phone companies. They
often have better plans and use the same networks
    the bigger telcos employ.

Does Your Mobile Phone Plan Include Unlimited
Standard Calls and SMS to Australian Numbers?
2. Analysis
  • 30 of people are not on unlimited plans.
  • So What ?
  • It is highly likely these users could get a
    better deal.
  • Almost all phone plans have unlimited calls and
SMS in Australia to Australian numbers now.
  • The cheapest plan with Unlimited voice starts at
    14 per month.

3. Analysis
How Much Do You Trust Your Telco?
  • If you dont trust your telco, consider moving.
  • Complaints to the TIO ( The Tellecommunications
Industry Ombudsman, the telco regulator) about
mobile services rose substantially over the last
year. The most common were billing enquiries.
(Likely related to users being on the wrong data
    plan-see later slides.)
  • So What ?
  • If you dont trust your current telco, move. The
process can take only 15 minutes if done online.

70 of people dont realize their data usage is
growing.
Dont get in to a phone contract.
We asked how much data people needed in a plan.
Most Common Answer ? 11GB
You need to know your data usage before you shop
for a plan. ( We can help!)
28 of people have been charged 10 or more in
the previous month for extra data.
If youre under contract, move up a plan. If
youre not, shop around.

4. Analysis
  • It is extremely unlikely these people are correct
    in their data estimation.
  • On average, people use between 70 and 100 more
    data per year.
  • So what ?
  • Avoid contracts see next slide. When you take a
no contract SIM Only / prepaid plan, you will be
given more data over time see 2 slides on.

Research from WhatPhone Archives - relevant to
next slide
4. Analysis
  • Ciscos research aligns with the ACCC which
suggests an average of 70 growth in data each
    year in Australia.

Research from WhatPhone Archives
  • In the 2 years between December 2014 and December
2016, Optus raised data inclusions 300 from
500MB to 1.5GB in their no contract 30/35 SIM
    Only plan.
  • In the year between December 2015 and December
2016, Vodafone raised data inclusions 300 from
500MB to 1.5GB in their no contract 30/35 SIM
    Only plan.
  • .
  • In the 2 years between December 2014 and December
2016, Telstra raised data inclusions 300 from
1.5GB to 5GB in their no contract 50/55 SIM
    Only plan.

11
5. Analysis
  • Respondents had a pretty even split of their data
    requirements.
  • These responses were very close to same question
for have (How much data do you have in your
    plan.)
  • The most common answer was 11GB or more
  • This is substantially more than advice even 2
    years ago
  • So what ?
  • You need to know your data usage before you
    consider buying a plan.
  • There is guidance on WhatPhone to show you how to
    establish your data use.

12
6. Analysis
  • 28 of people have been charged 10 or more in
the previous month for extra data.
  • As weve seen, average data usage is increasing
for normal users at a rate of 70 plus a year in
our region. That means that unless your data plan
increases, you will start to exceed your data
inclusion and incur the 10 fee.
  • So what ?
  • A 10 charge for extra data is a good indicator
that youre on the wrong plan.
  • If it happens more than once, consider contacting
your phone company to move up a spend level
(youll get more data for 10 that way).
  • If youre out of contract, consider shopping
    around for a better deal.
