2Fire Extinguishers - Do's and Don'ts
With increasing awareness of fire hazards more
and more households, offices and other buildings
are now investing in a basic firefighting system,
starting with a fire extinguisher. With the law
mandating strict compliance in case of certain
buildings, one is also legally compelled to do
so. However, just installing a fire extinguisher
on the premises is not enough. One must also be
aware of the Do's and Don'ts associated with
their usage. This includes knowledge of its
operation to maintenance and fire extinguishers
refilling India. In the densely packed and
crowded urban areas, following safety rules is
instrumental in preventing catastrophic
tragedies. So, to ensure that extinguishers are
used safely and properly, here is our list of
Do's and Don'ts
3Dos
1. Placement A fire breakout is always an
emergency and as such requires immediate action.
A fire can spread incredibly fast, especially if
there is flammable material in the room and that
includes an astonishing number of things! So,
the last thing you want in case of a breakout is
people running around looking for an
extinguisher. Remember, an extinguisher works
best in putting out fires, not dealing with a
full-scale outbreak. So, the placement of the
extinguisher is critical. It should be placed at
a clearly marked and visible space. At home or
office, every occupant must be informed about its
precise location. The path to the extinguisher
must also be clear. It should not be hidden
behind other structures. It should be easy to
reach and retrieve. It should be mounted at a
certain height from the floor so that it is not
easily reachable by children. It should be kept
close to an exit point so that you do not have to
walk into fire to retrieve it.
42. Getting the right type of extinguisher A fire
is not always the same, even though it may look
so! In fact, every fire has a particular type
that is decided by what fuels it. Consequently, a
fire extinguisher must also be picked according
to the type of fire your establishment is most
vulnerable to. To make this easy, fire is
categorized according to Classes and
extinguishers specify which Class it is equipped
to deal with. These classes are Class A -
Involving solid materials like textiles wood, or
paper. Class B - Involving flammable liquids,
like petrol, oils or diesel. Class C - Involving
gases. Class D - Involving metals. Class E -
Involving electrical apparatus. Choose the
extinguisher according to the type of material
stored at the premises. For instance, a CO2
extinguisher will be most suitable in Class B
fires, while a dry powder extinguisher may prove
better in a Class A fire.
53. Maintenance and refilling To ensure that
extinguishers are kept ready at all times, ensure
timely maintenance and fire extinguishers
refilling India. An extinguisher must be refilled
after any discharge. In addition, maintenance
must be carried out regularly to ensure all parts
are in working order.
64. Look for danger signs Check your extinguisher
regularly to ensure that it is in top working
order. Check the pressure gauge to make sure that
it is properly filled. Check handles and horns
for any cracks. Contact a specialist immediately
in case of any irregularity. 5. Call for help
Even when you have an extinguisher, call the
emergency services immediately. If the fire goes
out of your control, only firefighters can douse
it. 6. Organize regular fire safety talks with
employees or family members. Everyone must be
aware of the protocols at all times.
7Donts
1. Be a hero A fire is an enemy you cannot
control and most of us are not trained to do so.
Do not try to fight a fire if your guts tells you
that you cannot. Always ensure that you have a
clear escape route. 2. Keep the extinguisher too
close to a heat or magnetic source. 3. Use an
extinguisher without knowing how to operate it.
You may end up damaging it. 4. Use the wrong
extinguisher. It must be chosen according to the
Class of fire as explained above. 5. Play with
an extinguisher. You can end up damaging it or
expelling the agent, which will render it
useless. 6. Ignore a fire alarm
8Conclusion
The most tragic and criminal aspect of all fire
outbreaks in an urban setting is the fact that
these can easily be avoided if one followed the
carefully laid fire security standards. Buy the
right extinguisher, educate all concerned, ensure
regular maintenance and fire extinguishers
refilling India.
