Title: Why People Should Do Yoga in Their Golden Years

1
Why People Should Do Yoga in Their Golden Years
2
Aging can leave older people susceptible to
various medical conditions. However, yoga has
been shown to benefit seniors in many ways that
increase overall health. Here are a few reasons
adults over the age of 65 should add yoga to
their daily routines.
3
Relieve Chronic Pain
Researchers from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
studied the possible benefits seniors experienced
after practicing yoga. The group learned that in
four weeks, yoga participants reported having
less pain and were able to cut back on the amount
of pain medication they took. Yoga either
prevented the progression of conditions that
caused discomfort or provided marked improvement.
Seniors also reported they enjoyed better mood
and reduced anxiety.  Doing yoga is one of the
many ways older adults can boost their health and
enjoy a high quality of life. Maintaining a high
quality of life can be challenging for some
seniors, but professional caregivers can help
them obtain this goal. Families can trust
in Bethlehem, PA, home care experts to help their
elderly loved ones focus on lifestyle choices
that increase the chances of living a longer and
healthier life.
4
Enhance Strength
Physicians from the College of Health Professions
and the Temple University School of Podiatric
Medicine evaluated the stability of two dozen
elderly women who regularly engaged in Iyengar
yoga. After nine weeks, the class members were
able to walk faster and experienced increased
flexibility and better balance. Falls are a major
concern for seniors, and yoga has been shown to
reduce the risk.
5
Reduce High Blood Pressure
A group of researchers from the Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre in India assessed the benefits of
yoga for seniors diagnosed with cardiovascular
diseases. The study involved 20 volunteers who
all experienced mild to moderate hypertension.
The subjects practiced yoga for one hour every
day. After three months, the volunteers
demonstrated a reduction in blood pressure along
with lowered levels of cholesterol and
triglycerides.
6
Lower Blood Sugar Levels
Scientists from University College of Medical
Sciences in India evaluated the effects of yoga
on seniors over the age of 60 with type 2
diabetes. The volunteers engaged in yoga 40
minutes each day. After 40 days, the researchers
found that seniors showed a reduction in their
fasting blood sugar levels.  Caring for a senior
loved one with high blood sugar levels or other
health issues can be difficult at times. Families
who find it difficult to care for their aging
loved ones without assistance can benefit greatly
from professional respite care. Bethlehem, PA,

longevity.
7
Boost Respiratory Health
Seniors living with asthma tend to experience
easier breathing after participating in yoga,
which relaxes the muscles involved with inhaling
and exhaling. The postures and techniques of yoga
also reduce the anxiety felt by seniors with
asthma. After mastering the asanas and nagarathna
techniques, older adults often resort to yoga
rather than prescription medication. Practicing
yoga on a regular basis also increases lung
capacity by up to 10 percent.
8
Promote Restful Sleep
It is not unusual for older adults to have
difficulty falling asleep, and many seniors also
have an inability to stay asleep. A 2005 study
performed by researchers in India evaluated the
sleep pattern effects of Ayurveda medicine and
yoga on 69 seniors. One-third of the volunteers
formed a control group, while the rest were given
natural interventions or performed yoga. The
older adults who practiced yoga were able to fall
asleep faster and slept for one hour longer. The
other two groups showed no significant changes in
sleep patterns. In addition to assistance with
yoga and other physical activities, seniors may
need help with daily tasks to maintain a high
quality of life. Some seniors only require help
with a few daily tasks so they can maintain their
independence. However, those living with serious
illnesses may need more extensive assistance.
