Title: The Trend Round Up
1THE
TREND ROUND UP SPRING/SUMMER 2018
2The sweet taste of nostalgia beckons as designers
and high-fashion labels alike take to expressing
their love and empathy through the most
mass-appealing area of all time Fashion. Frisky
sequins, tassels, feathers and fringes, whimsical
sheer and tulle, slinky materials like satin and
high-gloss plastics all seemed to deviate our
concentrated attention towards the solemn state
of affairs in the world. The spirit of protest
was accompanied by a strong sense of times
reminiscent of the past the past that always
looks better than it actually was. And even in
our present day scenario, it's safe to say that
the past actually was the saviour. Fierce
individualistic references surrounding issues of
societal concern came as blaring slogans and
messages over garments that demanded a right to
inclusivity, individuality, equality and basic
human rights. Fashion is cyclical so it is no
surprise here that we observed a few yesteryear
darlings making a comeback. Brands continuously
strive to present fresh perspectives to
time-proven aesthetics, so the revival of shorts
and the satin slip were happily welcomed.
3An unsettling factor here though, is the sudden
crush surrounding plastics as a covetable
material. In an age where environmental and
sustainable concerns loom large over the heads of
the youth today, how safely can you bet on a
man-made material known to suffocate the life out
of our planet? With the fashion weeks coinciding
with the alarming hurricanes and earthquakes
sweeping over American soil, is this something we
should actually be celebrating and promoting? A
question, for all of us to reflect upon and an
idea that the makers of fashion really need to
reconsider. Fashion is not just an art, a
necessity and/or a business it is a social
responsibility and one wrong shot has the power
to set into motion, a complicated turn of events,
answerable for generations to come. Filing away
the seriousness for the logical mind to ponder
over, we have carved out the Top 10 trends from
the international showcases of Spring/Summer
2018, set to affect the future of fashion. Hoping
its a safe one as safe as we imagine our past
to be!
4Lilac Dreams
The Trend Round Up
Millennial pink takes on a moodier mood with
lilac emerging as the next big colour crush for
Spring/Summer 2018. The light purple hue seemed
to surpass as a commonality between colour
palettes at the international showcases this
season. No longer considered a demure, dainty,
romanticized colour, lilac is being treated in an
edgier manner. Owing to its details and
silhouettes, it is being opted for S/S18. To
make it appealing universally, designers have
come up with an option for every skin tone
ranging from light mauves to medium lavenders to
bold violets.

6Slinky Satin
The Trend Round Up
A multi-sensory experience was brought to the
fore by the ?uid nature and softness of texture
possessed by the satin fabric. The sheeny-shiny
materials, went through an upheaval with a myriad
of textural and ornamentation techniques. Trimmed
with crystals, dotted with subdued sequins, and
made edgier with the implementation of patchwork,
the associations of boudoir with satin has taken
a backseat and made it more wearable as jackets,
bombers, coats, slip dresses and even pants!

8Fantastic Plastic
The Trend Round Up
The vinyl hangover from Fall17 continues to grow
strong with staples such as trenches, jackets and
coats getting the clear and high-shine treatment
for Spring/Summer 2018. PVC and plastics
materials signal the dawn of a man-made future
set up against a sustainable dream still not
sure how this ?ts together, but it seems that
clarity is a prevalent theme across
genres. Trenches, capes, dresses, trousers and
coordinates, sometimes clear, and at times dipped
in popping bright, proved to be one of the trends
designers unanimously agreed upon.

10Ice-Cream Parlour
The Trend Round Up
Ice-cream tones were set in motion for the
approaching warmer months with a softer approach
towards colour. A very evident pastel palette
ensued with layers upon layers of sorbet hues
surfacing in multiple designer showcases. The
idea is very simple mimic a triple scoop
ice-cream of your favourite ?avour by piling up
garments in sorbet hues to match. Off-kilter
shades might be a rebellious way to further keep
the romance of millennial pink alive, but
whatever the reason, these tones have marked a
space for themselves come Spring.

12Print Mayhem
The Trend Round Up
With a wide gamut of cultural identities, racial
and ethnic characteristics and gender preferences
coming to the fore, it is no wonder then that the
same is being re?ected within designer
collections internationally. This season, fashion
did not shy away from bold, in-your-face pattern
play, but instead went ahead to mash up a series
of prints and motifs atop one another to create a
collage effect. Florals placed against polkas,
leopard prints mixed with tropical blooms or
patterned knits setting of a nostalgic vibe
their print menu was elaborate and endless.

14Sequin Soiree
The Trend Round Up
We found ourselves in a fairy tale of sorts with
a heavy dose of sparkle and shine surrounding us
during the Spring/Summer 2018 previews. A slew of
evening-ready looks, from glittery gowns and
embellished sleeves to mini dresses submerged in
crystals, took over the fashion week minus the
coyness. Monochromatic sequined suits made a case
in point for the more formal, business look while
sequined outerwear pieces mixed amidst textures
and prints brought about an eccentric vibe,
ensuring that no category is left untouched by
the glitterati in-charge.

16Japanese Affair
The Trend Round Up
As the boundaries between cultures continue to
blur, designers tend to their long-kept
fascination with other worldly design ethos. This
season, a signi?cant amount of designers
referenced details from the far ?ung Eastern
horizon giving a conventional twist to modern day
silhouettes. Oriental in?uences sprouted up in
mandarin collars, kimono style dresses and
jackets, and Japanese print motifs over
lush fabrics. A colour palette of opulent greens,
reds and gold in ?oor-grazing gowns belted at the
waist further transported us to the Land Where
The Sun Rises.

18Sheer Genius
The Trend Round Up
Sheer and semi-sheer garments continue to make a
cut for the approaching Spring/Summer season with
a variation in the way the materials have been
chosen and approached. Barely-there, diaphanous
dresses featuring chic cuts that entitled a lot
of skin-revealing, and layers upon layers of
embroidered tulle, invoked a feminine, romantic
vibe whilst see-through trenches and jackets,
along with clear shoes and bags presented a ready
market for everyday wear. It is to be noticed
that opacity is the current name of the game.

20Rain or Shine
The Trend Round Up
With the revival of the 90s at its peak,
designers presented an umpteen number of
nostalgic concoctions for the very vulnerable
millennial audience to grasp. In recent times,
there has been a collective shift towards
functionality and utility, which has observed a
keen number of takers in the retail-scape. The
water- proof, wind-shielding windcheater or
anorak jacket is one such piece that seemed to
garner a more grammable presence than its
contenders. Making it appeal to a diverse taste
palette was not a daunting task, as designers
balanced out casual and sportier versions with
dressier ones.

22 The Long and Short of it
The Trend Round Up
As hemlines continue to observe an upward spiral
(in terms of length), shorts throw a massive
comeback with a renewed perspective. Donning a
formal code, shorts have taken an extremely work
appropriate route by being paired with suit
jackets/blazers. We saw versions in leather,
satin and lace compete against athleisure
variants for a sportier look. It has to be said
that fashion indeed is cyclical, but this season,
the most surprising return has been that of the
(cycling) shorts.
