Why Do Dogs Eat Grass Most of the Time?
SEMINOLE KENNELS
Dog behavior can puzzle and confuse owners at
times. One such behavior is that of the dogs
penchant for grass. A dog is, strictly speaking,
not a confirmed carnivore so if he eats grass
that is not too difficult to understand. Here are
a few reasons why dogs eat grass.
2
Pica disorder
The sheepadoodle puppy might have what is known
as pica disorder. This may be due to some
nutritional deficiency. Feeding him high fiber
food may resolve this issue.
3
Not feeling well
A healthy sheepadoodle puppymay sample some grass
just out of curiosity but when it eats grass most
of the time it may indicate that he is not
feeling well and eats grass in order to vomit.
However, this is not a definite indicator. Dogs
may eat grass and will not throw up and it may
not be a sign that they are unwell.
4
Dogs may need fiber
Dogs may be wiser than they look. Dogs too need
fiber and eating grass may be one way of meeting
their fiber requirement and to improve digestion.
On the other hand, he could be munching on grass
just for fun. Provide him a variety of fiber rich
foods and the sheepadoodle puppy will not be
inclined to eat grass most of the time.
5
Their ancestors used to eat grass
It is not just pets who have a fondness for
grass. Even dogs in the wild have a go at grass
directly or ingest it when they eat intestines of
their prey. It is an instinctive behavior so
there is nothing much to worry about if your pet
feels like being a sheep at times.
6
Eating grass makes them feel happy
Dogs have not put on record their feelings but
one can assume that a playfully frisky puppy will
munch on grass because it makes him feel happy.
However, even if he eats too much he cannot get
high on it so there is no reason to worry. Look
on the plus side. Grass may help keep his teeth
and gums healthy. If he throws up afterwards, his
stomach gets cleaned.
