Definition of Gamma Radiation
Gamma rays, also known as gamma radiation,
refers to electromagnetic radiation (no rest
mass, no charge) of a very high energies. Gamma
rays are high-energy photons.

Medical Use of Gamma Radiation
To destroy brain cancers, surgeons use a "gamma
ray knife." This consists of many tiny beams of
gamma rays focused on the cells that need to be
destroyed. These beams are small enough to affect
healthy parts of the brain that are unlikely to
be destroyed. It is the best way to perform
brain surgery. It is less painful and allows the
body to recuperate faster.
