Title: Preventing Medical Identity Theft in Healthcare Firms
1Preventing Medical Identity Theft in Healthcare
Firms
2Medical identity theft is a concern mainly for
patients, healthcare providers, and health plans.
It also makes medical data entry processes and
other healthcare back office services risk-prone
and sensitive.
3February 2017 Survey from Accenture
1
One in four U.S. consumers (26 percent) has had
their personal medical information stolen from
technology systems
50 of those who experienced a breach were
victims of medical identity theft and had to pay
approximately 2,500 in out-of-pocket costs per
incident, on average
2
The breaches were most likely to occur in
hospitals, followed by urgent-care clinics (22
percent), pharmacies (22 percent), physicians
offices (21 percent) and health insurers (21
percent).
3
4Often medical data theft occurs after an offer of
free medical equipment or services followed by a
request for a Medicare number, a request from a
friend, relative, or stranger to borrow or pay to
use a Medicare card or a telephone survey that
asks for a Medicare number.

This Social Security Number Removal Initiative
(SSNRI) mission will begin by April 2018 and end
on December 31, 2019.
It is to fight such ID thefts that Medicare will
be mailing their beneficiaries a new card with a
unique new number to identify them.
5Better identity verification based on Equifax,
Experian, TransUnion and LexisNexis identity
verification and knowledge-based authentication
Unnecessary patient details, especially those
containing personal information should be
disposed of in a responsible manner
Tips to Protect Patient Data from Identity Theft
Invest in the right health IT solution and secure
storage options
As many cases of fraud can be prevented by
patients paying closer attention to their
records, educate them about medical identity theft
Train hospital staffs to identify errors that
could signal fraud during patient interactions
and when processing paperwork
6Every hospital should be aware of such steps to
prevent ID thefts. Firms that are considering
data entry outsourcing should also make sure to
choose an experienced vendor that adheres to
HIPAA guidelines.
