What is age-related hearing loss?
  • Age-related hearing loss also known as
    presbycusis refers to the gradual deterioration
    in hearing.This hearing loss is permanent and
    usually affects both ears equally. A number of
    factors can contribute to presbycusis, including
    genetics, the environment, medical conditions,
    free radicals and internal DNA damage.

Indicators Of Hearing Loss
  • There is some Sign or Symptoms of hearing loss-
  • any noticeable change in the ability to hear -
    face to face or on the telephone
  • voices sounding muffled, indistinct or distorted
  • frequent requests for words to be repeated
  • trouble hearing in noisy settings
  • needing TV/radio volume set higher
  • speaking loudly, due to difficulty in hearing own
    voice level
  • not responding to a question or giving an
    unrelated answer to a question
  • difficulty hearing the ring of the telephone or
    the doorbell
  • feeling more tired due to extra demands on
    concentration.

Causes Of Hearing Loss
  • Causes of hearing loss is too many which is given
    below-
  • age-related changes to the inner ear
  • noise exposure
  • accumulated ear wax
  • certain drugs which can damage the hearing system
  • other illnesses, e.g. diabetes, stroke, Meniere's
    disease, meningitis
  • existing hearing loss from other causes (e.g.
    childhood infections).

Communication Tactics
  • When speaking to a person with a hearing loss
  • Gain attention before speaking.
  • Maintain face-to-face contact, in good light.
  • Avoid background noise wherever possible.
  • Speak in a normal voice, with natural lip
    movement, at an unhurried pace.
  • Introduce the topic to give extra clues and aid
    educated guesswork .
  • Get to the point but avoid sudden changes of
    subject which may cause confusion.
  • Where information is misheard, repeat or rephrase
    message.
  • Remember that a little patience and perseverance
    is well worthwhile.

Assessment And Treatment
  • 1.Assistive/Adaptive Devices-There are many
    products that can help you live well with
    less-than-perfect hearing. The list below
    includes some examples of the many choices
  • Telephone amplifying devices range from a special
    type of telephone receiver that makes sounds
    louder to special phones that work with hearing
    aids.
  • TV and radio listening systems can be used with
    or without hearing aids. You do not have to turn
    the volume up high.
  • Assistive listening devices are available in some
    public places such as auditoriums, movie
    theaters, churches, synagogues, and meeting
    places.
  • Hearing Aid Babies as young as 4 weeks old can
    benefit from hearing aid but even the best
    hearing aids may not help a baby if she/he has
    served or complete hearing loss.
