About Prescription Drug Addicttion
  • Prescription drug abuse affects X many people in
the United States alone. Prescription drug abuse
occurs when an individual is using their
medication for purposes other than what is was
prescribed for such as getting high or for
gaining better concentration. When someone is
addicted to a medication they must continue to
use it regardless of the harm it is causing to
them physically or mentally. In these
circumstances, prescription drug abuse can take
over someones life and in some cases bring it to
an end. This doesnt have to happen though. For
those abusing prescription drugs, help is
available. By seeking treatment, a person can
regain their old self. Many treatment centers
will combine the use of medication and therapy to
provide the best possible recovery and ensure
    that it lasts.

Prescription Drug Abuse
  • One of the most rapidly increasing substance
abuse concerns nationwide is that of misuse of
prescription drugs. There are a number of people
who are given prescription medication for healing
purposes but many end up abusing them. If someone
is taking more of a medication than prescribed,
taking someone elses medication or using their
medication to get high, it means they are abusing
it. Some of the most commonly abused medications
    include stimulants, opioids and benzodiazepines.
Abusing prescription medication can have a host
of consequences from forming a dependence on the
drug to developing health issues as a result of
abusing too much of the medication. Whether a
person is starting to abuse a medication or is
fully addicted to it, help should be sought
    sooner rather than later.

Stimulant Abuse
  • Stimulant abuse involves the abuse of medications
that include amphetamines like Adderall and
    methylphenidate like Ritalin or Concerta.
Normally stimulants are prescribed to treat
    issues such as attention-deficit hyperactivity
disorder by creating a calming or focusing
    effect. Unfortunately these stimulant medications
can be abused to help a person lose weight,
perform better in school or just to get the
effect of the euphoria they can create.
  • Signs that a person is abusing stimulants can
    include
  • An increased body temperature
  • Increased energy
  • Decreased fatigue and appetite
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Euphoria

5
Danger Of Prescription Drug Abuse
  • As can be expected there are multiple dangers
    attached to abusing prescription medications.
  • Prescription abuse can harm a persons physical
and psychological health. In some cases abuse of
medications can lead to the development of mood
disorders such as anxiety or depression. It can
also cause lowered cognitive ability, memory
problems, heart problems and other issues with a
    persons organs.
  • There is also the possibility of a persons
    prescription abuse leading to legal
complications. If the individual is caught taking
anothers medication, he or she could face
charges of prescription fraud forgery. Those
under the influence are also more likely to
    engage in criminal behavior.
  • There is also danger attached to a person
    withdrawing from these medications. Withdrawal
    symptoms can include perspiration, agitation,
nausea and more. Those withdrawing from opioids
could encounter nausea, vomiting and pain in
their bones. Stimulants withdrawal could cause
exhaustion and sleep problems. In most cases it
is better for a person to find an effective detox
program to help them through the withdrawal
    process.

6
Treatment Program
  • One of the most alarming trends in recent years
has been the growth of prescription drug abuse.
Many are now turning to this form of medication
misuse, as some are under the false impression
that this is a safer alternative than using
illicit drugs. Yet there can be numerous dangers
associated with such substances, including the
    development of physical dependence. Additional
health dangers such as overdose, especially when
medications are combined with other substances,
are also possible. Much like with the abuse and
addiction to illicit drugs it is often best that
an individual who wishes to break free of their
destructive habits seek recovery through a
treatment program. Some may be hesitant or
resistant to accept treatment. This can be
    understandable, as addiction could have
progressed to the point that the person is
fearful to undergo withdrawals. Yet the odds of
success can be much greater if the person in
enrolled in a professional treatment program.
Many effective treatment programs will utilize a
safe detox treatment, medication if necessary and
different forms of therapy to provide their
clients with a thorough and long lasting recovery.

7
Detox
  • Detox and withdrawal will always be the first
step to recovery. This step may often be what
keeps an individual from pursuing a life of
sobriety as it can be uncomfortable for many as
    the substance leaves their body.
  • In some cases a person can bear down and get
through their withdrawal at home but this is not
suggested. It is often better to seek help with a
detox program. Hospitals can provide detox
services and some treatment providers have them
available too. A detox program will keep an
individual safe while they go through the
withdrawal process, marking the state of their
mental and physical well-being and helping to
ease the process with medication when necessary.
  • Once a person has gone through detox they can
    truly focus on their recovery.

Therapy Options
  • Much like how there are multiple options
available for medication that can help with
recovery, there are also different types of
therapy that can aid someone in their pursuit of
sobriety. Individual and group therapies are
available to help clients with their treatment.
Some, such as Cognitive-behavioral therapy, will
seek to help the client identify the connection
between their thoughts and behaviors and allow
them to change their thinking to support less
destructive behaviors. Other therapies will help
clients identify harmful patterns in their
day-to-day living and guide them to change their
lifestyle so that situations and social groups
related to prescription abuse can be more easily
avoided. Still other forms of therapy can help a
person focus on building life skills, dealing
with past trauma, coping with symptoms of a
mental health disorder and so on. There are even
therapies that focus on ones physical health
such as recreational therapy, yoga, diet and
nutritional planning and so on. Ultimately, what
therapies are suggested for a client will depend
solely upon his or her individual circumstances.
