Title: 10 Virtual Reality Trends for 2018

1
10 Virtual Reality Trends for 2018
2
1. Affordable Headsets
2018 is seeing the development of affordable
headsets that will encourage mass consumer
adoption of VR. More high-quality affordable
options for mobile VR like Google Daydream View
and Samsung Gear VR Acer and HP to debut
affordable tethered Windows Mixed Reality
headsets by the end of 2018

2. Full scale immersion
A focus on the development of hyper-real
immersive environments, where visuals, sounds and
interactions mimic real-world sensations to the
fullest using enhanced graphics with high frame
rates and  3D audio technology that lets users
hear sounds above, below and around
them. Qualcomm and Leapmotion have introduced
SnapDragon, a VRDK that combines positional and
hand-tracking  in a natural intuitive interface.

3. Inside-out tracking
Early VR platforms used outside-in tracking,
where external cameras and sensors are necessary
to track objects. This limits users to a
particular space within the range of
sensors. Inside-out tracking places sensors on
the headset itself to eliminate the need for
external cameras. Platforms like Googles
WorldSense use inside out tracking to provide
increased mobility, more immersion and remove
occlusion problems.

4. Portable, wireless VR
VR devices are starting to do away with cables
and wires to maximise portability and user
mobility. Without tethered headsets, users can
move freely in the real world, leading to more
immersive experiences. Intel and HTC are
releasing a wireless version of HTC vive VR using
Intels WiGig technology. Oculus is also
releasing a wireless headset in 2018.
6
6. Business adoption of VR
As VR software and hardware improve, businesses
have begun using reality technology in Training
applications Immersive simulations to train and
evaluate employees in an effective and safe
manner. Remote conferencing Virtual conference
rooms to connect and interact with team members
from across the globe. Product testing Realistic
visualizations of new products to optimize design
and manufacturing processes.

7. Social VR
  • VR is ushering in the new era of social
networking, offering people the chance to meet
new friends, network and collaborate in immersive
life-like environments, no matter where they are.
  • People can create online avatars and choose from
variety of virtual environments to socialize in
  • VR social networking platforms like Oculus
Rooms, vTime, Bigscreen and Rec Room are already
    attracting enthusiasts.

7. VR in branding marketing
  • Brands are using VR technology to connect with
consumers and promote products and services.
  • 360 video streams for product demos and events.
  • On-site VR experiences to creatively promote
    products and services.

8. Retail and shopping
VR is the latest trend in online shopping, with
retailers building virtual stores to create
authentic shopping experiences for customers. VR
systems transport consumers to virtual versions
of retail outlets to browse, select and view
realistic representation of products without
leaving the comfort of their homes

9. VR movies
With heavy investment in VR hardware and
software, cinematic VR experiences are the new
age mass medium for storytelling. Movie giant
IMAX opened its first VR theatre earlier this
year. Major movie studios are creating VR
experiences for blockbusters like Planet of the
Apes, Power Rangers and Transformers.

10. New experiences
  • As VR technology evolves, content creators are
developing new experiences in the fields of
    education, entertainment, travel and tourism.
  • VR based theme park experiences and amusement
    parks
  • Interactive VR exhibits in museums and art
    galleries
  • 360 degree video streaming of live sporting
    events and concert experiences
  • Interactive educational applications to
    supplement classroom learning
