Title: Complications post a Kidney Transplant
1Complications post a Kidney Transplant
2Kidney and its Transplant
- Kidneys are a very important part of the human
body and the healthier they are, the more
improved lifestyle a person will have. - Nephrons are the structural and functional units
of the kidney and when they are damaged, the
filtering abilities of kidneys is lost. - This means high amounts of life-threatening waste
products and chemicals will keep accumulating in
the body. - Although many such patients are put on a regular
dialysis, some are suggested to have a kidney
transplant. - But like every other major surgery, this surgery
also has some possible complications. But when
compared to dialysis in some cases, kidney
transplant treatment seems better.

4Complications after a Kidney Transplant
- Considering that kidney transplant is a big
surgery, it has its own complications. - Although the doctors do their best to prepare the
patient for the surgery, sometimes he or she
might face some difficulties, even though their
probability is very less with todays new and
improved technology and techniques.
5Rejection
- Rejection is the most critical problem faced by
some kidney transplant patients. - This happens because the immune system of our
body perceives the kidney as a foreign object and
thus, instantly starts to react against it. - The consequences can be massive damage to the new
kidney. - Rejection of the new kidney can be diagnosed by
symptoms like fever, soreness and reduction in
the amount of urine production. - But, the rejection can easily be avoided by
taking the reaction immune suppressing
medications regularly, as prescribed by the
doctor.
6Side Effects of Immunosuppressants
- The use of immune suppressing medications,
although important, can lead to several problems
as they diminish the ability of immune cells to
function. - This makes the patient vulnerable to infections
and conditions like puffiness of face, increase
in weight, high blood sugar blood pressure,
bone disease, cataracts, stomach acidity, skin
changes, acne, and facial hair. - Long term immune suppressants can also cause
certain cancers, or damage to liver or kidney.
7Possible early complications
- Abscesses within the abdominal walls
- Bleeding
- Abdominal hernias
- Infectious tracts or canals
- Formation of blood clots or arterial thrombosis
8Possible late complications
- Narrowing of the ureters and obstruction to flow
of urine from kidney into the bladder - Infection of the kidneys
- Herpes simplex, cytomegalovirus, fungal and
bacterial infections - Kidney stones from the donated kidney
- Lymph channel abnormalities called lymphoceles
- Cancers of skin or lymphomas
- Heart disease like high blood pressure and high
cholesterol - Damage in new kidney due to recurrence of the
original kidney dysfunction.
