Leukaemia Treatment in Uganda

• Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer
  that starts from white blood cells called
  lymphocytes in the bone marrow (the soft inner
  part of the bones, where new blood cells are
  generated).
• The term acute means that the leukemia
  can progress quickly, and if not treated, would
  probably be fatal within a few months. Lymphoblas
  tic means it develops from early (immature)
  forms of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

Myeloma Treatment in Uganda

• Multiple myeloma is a cancer arising
  from abnormal growth of plasma cells. Plasma
  Cells are a normal component of the bone marrow
  which is produced from B lymphocytes.
• They are responsible for producing IMMUNOGLOBULINS
  , which are proteins produced to fight
  infections. In multiple myeloma, collections of
  abnormal plasma cells accumulate in the bone
  marrow, where they interfere with the production
  of normal blood cells

• Lymphoma begins when B cells, T cells, or NK
  cells in the lymphatic system change and grow
  uncontrollably, which sometimes may form a
  tumor. 
• Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a term that refers
  to the many other types of cancer of the
  lymphatic system, which can have different
  symptoms and signs, physical findings, and
  treatments.

Sickle Cell Anemia Treatment in Uganda

• Sickle Cell Anaemia is the most common form
  of sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD is a serious
  disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped
  red blood cells. Sickle-shaped means that the
  red blood cells are shaped like a crescent.
• Normal red blood cells are disc-shaped and look
  like doughnuts without holes in the centre. They
  move easily through the blood vessels. Red blood
  cells contain an iron-rich protein called
  haemoglobin. This protein carries oxygen from the
  lungs to the rest of the body.

Bone Marrow Transplant in Uganda

• Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside our
  bones that makes blood-forming cells (blood stem
  cells). These cells turn into blood cells
  including
• White blood cells to fight infections.
• Red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the
  body.
• Platelets to control bleeding
• Blood-forming cells are also found in the blood
  stream and the umbilical cord blood.

Stem Cell Transplant in Uganda

• For Stem Cell Donation, Firstly the donor should
  be the BEST MATCH for the patient which is
  identified by Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)
  Typing Test and secondly the donor needs to be
  MEDICALLY FIT to be able to donate.
• STEPS in PBSC (Stem Cell) Donation
• It is a non-surgical procedure performed in
  outpatient hospital facility, wherein
  donors blood is removed through a catheter (a
  thin, flexible plastic tube) and circulated into
  a blood cell separator machine called as Stem
  Cell Apheresis Device.
