blood banking worth the
cost?

Cord blood banking is one of the most suggested
advises doled out by leading gynaecologists,
doctors and other medical service providers. So
several questions arise in ones mind, what is
cord blood and why should the new parents opt to
store the cord blood of the baby and what are the
benefits of doing so? Well, in this article I
will be answering all these questions and more so
that you might get all your queries
cleared. Cord blood as the name suggests is a
reference to the few ounces of blood found in the
umbilical cord and placenta of the baby. This
blood contains stem cells which are known to have
regenerative and healing properties. Technically
speaking, stem cells are found in almost all
other parts of body such as bone marrow but the
cord blood is known to be the richest source of
stem cells and thus the doctors and other medical
service providers insist on storing the cord
blood for future use so that if your child or any
other biologically related family member such as
mother, father or sibling is in a life
threatening situation then he or she can utilise
this cord blood to save his or her life.

Also, the medical researchers have a hunch that
these stem cells have the capability to cure the
incurables and therefore they are actively
researching in that area and if their research
bears fruits then one can expect some path
breaking medical procedures being
introduced. There are two ways of storing cord
blood for future use public cord blood bank
which is free and open for all or you can opt for
private cord blood bank which charges you an
amount to store the blood and you may have to
renew the membership annually to keep the blood
stored. Now the question is is it worth opting
for a private cord blood bank when the public one
which is free does the same job? Well, the major
difference between the two is that the private
cord blood bank stores the blood exclusively for
your family members or in other words, it means
not only the baby but the ones who are
biologically related to the baby such as
grandparents, parents, siblings etc can access
the cord blood if they are in dire need of it.
5
Therefore, storing cord blood in a private cord
blood bank is not only beneficial for the new
born baby but also for those who are directly
related to him or her which might not be the case
if you opt for a public cord blood bank because
you might have to run around if one does not have
the one you are searching for. Also, in some
cases, despite getting a matching cord blood, the
patients body rejects the blood and thus letting
your efforts go futile. But if you have
membership in a private blood bank you can use
the related or the patients own cord blood
stored in there for the emergency medical
procedures which is will minimise the risk and
speed up the recovery process since it will be
perfect biological match.
6
Babies who have parents from two different races
should definitely opt for the private cord blood
bank because they might have fewer chances of
getting the donors from a public cord blood
bank. Also, the families who are registered
with the private cord blood bank might stand the
chance to first benefit from the emerging stem
cell therapy since complicated medical conditions
emerge in the latter half of life. So are you
ready to opt for a private cord blood bank even
if it charges you a hefty amount in return?
