Leukaemia Treatment in India
  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is the commonest
childhood cancer. This arises from abnormalities
in the precursors of normal lymphocytes which are
otherwise a normal part of our immune system
necessary to fight infections. These abnormal
cells rapidly fill up the bone marrow space
    suppressing the normal cells.
  • In most cases, the disease is characterized by
certain abnormalities in the chromosomes which pro
mote abnormal growth of certain lymphoid
cells rather than maturation to normal
    lymphocytes.

4
Myeloma Treatment in India
  • Multiple Myeloma goes through 3 stages
  • MGUS (Monoclonal Gammopathy of Uncertain
Significance) This is diagnosed when a patient
is found to have an abnormal immunoglobulin in
small amounts without any symptoms or involvement
    of any organs.
  • Indolent Myeloma This is diagnosed when the
diagnostic workup fulfils the criteria of MM but
    the patient is asymptomatic.
  • Symptomatic Myeloma when along with the above
    the patient is symptomatic.

5
Lymphoma Treatment in India
  • Lymphoma begins when B cells, T cells, or NK
cells in the lymphatic system change and grow
uncontrollably, which sometimes may form a tumor.
  • Because lymphatic tissue is found in most parts
of the body, NHL can start almost anywhere and
can spread to almost any organ. It most often
begins in the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, or bone
marrow, but it can also involve the stomach,
intestines, skin, thyroid gland, brain, or any
other part of the body. It is very important to
know which type and subtype has been diagnosed
because this information helps doctors determine
the best treatment and a patients prognosis
    (chance of recovery).

6
Sickle Cell Anemia Treatment in India
  • Complete Blood Count and PERIPHERAL Blood
Smear The characteristic finding of SCD is
circulating sickle shaped red cells. Routine
examination of the blood gives the diagnosis.
  • Reticulocytosis i.e. increase in young red blood
    cells is almost always seen.
  • Hemoglobin Electrophoresis This is the
cornerstone of diagnosis and is used to detect
Hemoglobin S. HbA2 and often HbF are increased in
patient with sickle cell-B thalassemia. Despite
high level of HbF at birth, electrophoresis can
    detect HbS in the newborn.

Bone Marrow Transplant in India
  • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) also called as Stem
Cell Transplant is a procedure to replace damaged
or destroyed bone marrow of a patientwith healthy
bone marrow stem cells of the donor. It is the
soft, fatty tissue inside your bones which
produces blood cells. Stem cells are immature
cells in the bone marrow that give rise to all of
your different blood cells. BMT procedure
involves transplanting blood stem cells, which
travel to the bone marrow where they produce new
blood cells and promote growth of new marrow
which in turn give a normal healthy life to the
    patient.

8
Stem Cell Transplant in India
  • Stem Cell Donation, Firstly the donor should be
the BEST MATCH for the patient which is
identified by Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)
Typing Test and secondly the donor needs to be
MEDICALLY FIT to be able to donate.
  • STEPS in PBSC (Stem Cell) Donation
  • It is a non-surgical procedure performed in
    outpatient hospital facility, wherein
donors blood is removed through a catheter (a
thin, flexible plastic tube) and circulated into
a blood cell separator machine called as Stem
    Cell Apheresis Device.
  • This Apheresis Device filters out the STEM CELLS
from the Donor's Blood is transferred to a
collection bag the remaining Blood (plasma, red
blood cells, and platelets) is injected back into
    the donor with another catheter.
