  • It doesnt matter how far you move for
    college, youll likely feel at least a little
    homesick at first. College is the first time most
    students are permanently away from home and
    theyre in a completely new environment. The good
    news is that there are strategies you can use to
    settle into your Durham College residence faster.

Realize Its Normal
  • Feeling as if being homesick is wrong or that
    youre weaker than other students is unproductive
    and untrue. Know that almost everyone is
    suffering from homesickness, even if they dont
    show it. Beating yourself up about how youre
    feeling will only make the problem worse.

Make Your Room a Home
  • Bring some comfort items with you to your new
    home. For instance, you could place a framed
    photo next to your bed of your best friends or
    pack a personal possession that always improves
    your mood. For example, many people take a

  • You may have the urge to shut yourself in
    your room and chat to friends who want to
    different colleges or just spend all your time on

    homesickness. Find out about events taking place,
    arrange to meet up with new friends, or just
    schedule time to relax.

  • Homesickness can become too much to deal with

    have other worries, such as about challenging
    classes, your part-time job, or financial
    matters. Use the counselling services offered by
    your university for support or even turn to a
    lecturer you trust.

  • Whenever youre feeling alone, remember that
    your friends and family members are just a phone
    call away. Just ensure that you dont talk too
    much to these people you need to make plenty of
    new friends, too. It may be useful to keep in
    touch by sending occasional update messages
    rather than having full conversations.
