Title: How to select Welding Wires?

1
How to select Welding Wires?

2
  • Many gas-shielded electrodeseach with different
arc behavior, mechanical properties and intended
applications are available for almost any
welding project. Depending on your requirements
for productivity, quality and cost, you can
choose from among three different Welding Wires
    for your application
  • Solid gas metal arc welding wire (GMAW)
  • Composite GMAW wire (metal-cored)
  • Gas-shielded flux-cored arc welding wire (FCAW)

3
Solid GMAW Wire
  • GMAW requires a solid wire electrode. The
mechanical properties and power of the weld
deposit depend first on the chemistry of the wire
and second on the type of shielding gas used.
Shielding gas is essential to protect the weld
    from the atmosphere. Fabricators frequently
prefer GMAW because the weld deposit is slagless
and requires little or no cleanup, which rise
    efficiency.

4
Metal-cored Wire
  • Metal-cored wires are tubular electrodes
with metallic ingredient in the core. Like solid
GMAW wire, metal-cored wire generate a slagless
weld that requires little or no cleanup. The
performance characteristics also are identical to
those of solid GMAW wire. Lately classified as a
flux-cored wire, metal-cored wire now is grouped
    as a composite GMAW electrode.

5
Gas-shielded FCAW Wire
  • These tubular electrodes implant fluxing
agents in the core, as well as deoxidizers, to
bestow additional protection from the atmosphere.
The flux ingredients can be engineered to
increase the mechanical properties of the weld
deposit. FCAW electrodes are accessible for both
    out-of-position and in-position welding.

6
Look for Consistency
  • Now that you know all about the Welding Wires,
it's important to keep in mind that all
electrodes are not created same. Look for wire
that offers relavent chemistry, feedability, wire
diameter, and arc performance. Changes in the
wire may result in higher operating costs, lower
    productivity and inconsistent welds.
  • For example, incompatible wire diameter can cause
feeding problems and they want repetitive
procedural adjustments within a spool or during
spools. Incompatible feedability results in wire
chatter, decrease gun consumables life, poor
starting, and wire burnback in the contact tip.
  • Consistency is very important to improve
    productivity on the production line.
