Bone Health
  • Bone is a living tissue. It comprises of cells
that are in a constant state of a turnover.
  • The various components that form bone are formed
    and the older components replaced.
  • The components respond to the general health and
the presence of a disease. It is also responsive
to the general activities such as walking.
  • The quality of bone density drops when a person
is bed-bound. A similar trend is noted in the
astronauts in a zero gravity environment.

Bone Health
  • Bone density can be assessed by specialized
scans. One such scan is called the DEXA scan. It
provides an objective assessment of bone density.
  • Blood tests give additional information regarding
    bone quality.
  • Several factors affect bone health such as
reduced level of activity, age, vitamin D
    deficiencies, systemic illness and smoking.
  • Mitigating these factors can optimize bone
    health.
  • Specific medications are sometimes required to
    improve the bone density.
