Vijayadashami is celebrated across India with
gaiety and piety. The Hindu festival marks the
end of Navaratri. It is known as Dusshera,
Dasara, or Dashain. Mythological stories differ
from one place to another, but the essence of the
festival remains that it marks a victory of good
over evilDuring Dusshera, people visit tourist
attractions, host get-togethers, play rummy and
other games for fun. Lets have a look at how
people celebrate Dusshera in different parts of
India Dasara in Mysore Coming back to
celebrations, in the South, Mysuru Dasara is
well-known and the procession with an elephant
carrying 750-kg howdah is world famous as people

important is the celebration in Bengal,
especially in Kolkata. Preparations begin months
in advance and competitions are held for
decorating pandals. Lakhs of rupees are spent on

a sea of humanity in colourful dresses hopping
from one pandal to another. It is all dance and

Navratri in Gujrat In the West, Gujarat takes
the cake with its Navaratri celebrations and
people gather in large numbers to witness Garba
dances. Visitors are treated to great food,
energetic Garba dances and vibrantly
coloured chaniya cholis,kediyus and kafni pajamas
twirling to the beat of the dhol. Iconic Gujarati
aarti dance performed in honor of the mother
goddess is a treat to watch as thousands of
people dance in circles around intricate
arrangements of earthen lamps to commemorate the
triumph of good over evil.

Navratri in Delhi In Delhi, many grounds
organize performances of Ramlila, which chronicle
the story of Lord Ram and his battle with the
evil king Ravana. The performances end with
effigies of Ravana, which are stuffed with
firecrackers, being burnt to the ground,
signifying his defeat. As the firecrackers go up
in flames, it provides a spectacle for the
thousands of people who gather to watch the
festivities. One of the largest Ramlila
celebrations is held at the Ramlila Maidan in
central Delhi. It is believed that Ram Lila
musical was started by Mughal Emperor Bahadur
Shah Zafar.
