From Silverware to Flatware Evolution of Cutlery
  • Art of Luxury Dining

Though most of us believe that nothing can beat
the pleasure of eating with hand, but in recent
times the use of cutlery has become a necessity
and hence tops the list of table manners. Cutlery
is also referred to as tableware or flatware.
Integral items that complete a cutlery set
include a spoon, a knife, and a fork. Taking you
back to the old times, cutlery was primarily made
of sterling silver. But with changing, the
materialistic composition of cutlery was changed
to stainless steel.
Taking into consideration the chemical reaction
of silver metal with the food, it was concluded
that cutlery craftsmanship should be shifted to
some other metal which reacts less with the food.
Recollecting the emergence of cutlery, one may
find that spoons were the first to same into
existence, followed by knife and then fork.

Spoons were mainly used in consuming food and
were made of wood or shells. A well-carved spoon
was first made with a cover and a spout. Later a
better interpretation was introduced wherein the
spoon was cast into a small and leaf shaped bowl
with decorative carvings on the handle ends. A
little more improvisation resulted in the present
day shape of the spoon wherein the handle was
flattened and the bowl was given an elliptical
shape. Similarly, the fork has also stood the
test of time. Forks predominantly came into the
picture during the 18th century. Dating back a
few centuries, fork design includes two-tines but
with the passage of time, a third tine and
eventually a fourth tine was incorporated to
avoid food falling from the gaps. On the other
hand, knives initially shaped of iron were
literally used as weapons, and eventually made
its way to the dining table setting. In modern
times, knives are made of a variety of materials
like iron, stainless steel, copper, and ceramics.
Construction of knives has evolved with changing
patterns in blade styles.
