A Beginners Guide to Dental Implants Treatment
  • By Westend Dental

2
Introduction..
  • Dentures and bridges were long thought of the
most effective treatments for missing or failing
teeth. Today, though, you have another option.
Dental implants have rapidly become the gold
    standard and for good reason.
  • One dental implant can support one crown, while
implant supported dentures and fixed implant
bridges need just a few dental implants to
support a full arch of high-quality, strong, and
stable replacement teeth. The method of
inserting dental implants is the same despite
specifically that procedure you decide on.

3
Examination and Treatment Planning
  • The first step is a thorough examination. We will
ensure that dental implants are the best solution
for you, and will determine exactly what steps
need to occur before you are ready to receive
    implants.
  • We will take X-rays and scans to learn the
current condition of your mouth, and then work
with you to develop a treatment plan. Please feel
free to ask questions and express any concerns
    you have.

4
Tooth Repair and Extraction
  • Once your existing dental problems are treated,
any teeth that need removal are extracted. This
relatively minor procedure can be performed under
local anesthesia or while you are safely sedated
    in our office.
  • Although it is normal to feel a bit sore for the
next few days, many patients report that they
feel much better overall once the bad teeth are
gone. Temporary teeth will be made, so that you
are not without teeth while you heal.

5
Bone Grafting (if Needed)
  • Most people do not need bone grafting, but if you
do, it is not something that we can skip. Bone
grafting is a simple procedure that builds up the
jawbone to create a strong base for your dental
implants. Depending on how much bone grafting you
need, it could take weeks or months to heal.

6
Implant Placement
  • Placing dental implants is a minor oral surgery.
After thoroughly numbing your mouth, we will cut
a small flap in your gums, and then use a series
of drills to open a tiny, precise hole in your
    jawbone.
  • We will screw the biocompatible titanium dental
implant into the opening, cover it with a healing
cap or cover screw, and close your gums. If you
need multiple dental implants, we can place them
all at once. You will continue to wear your
temporary partial or full denture for several
weeks while the implant fuses with your jawbone.

7
Abutment and Crown
  • Once your implant has fused with your jawbone,
you will return for an abutment and crown. During
this minor procedure, we will reopen the gum
tissue and replace the cover screw or healing cap
with an abutment. We then carefully place the
    final crown on top.
  • If you are having multiple tooth replacements,
you will have had two or more implants placed at
the same time. During this step, you will receive
abutments for all of your implants, as well as
    your custom denture or bridge.

8
All-on-Four
  • All-on-Four is a unique option that allows us to
secure a full arch of fixed teeth on just four
dental implants. The implants are considered
immediate-load, which means that you will receive
fixed teeth on the same day as your implant
    surgery.
  • In a few months, you will have a final fixed
bridge fabricated. This restoration is much
stronger and looks even more natural than the
immediate bridge placed after your surgery.
