Disadvantage of Variac Transformer

• If any winding of auto transformer short
  circuited the output voltages will swing to
  higher voltages than operating voltage causing a
  very huge damage.
• It consists of single winding around the iron
  core which develops
• There is no isolation of low and high voltages
  either at the input or at the output of the
  transformer. So any noise or voltage pertaining
  on one side will reflects on the other side. So
  Filtering circuits are necessary wherever auto
  transformer is used in electronic circuits.
