Peptic Ulcer
The most common reason for peptic ulcer disease
is an infection caused by a bacteria called H
pylori. The second most common reason for the
ulcers is long-term use of nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin,
ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), naproxen
(Aleve), etc. Peptic ulcer is not caused by
stress or spicy foods!

When your stomach's healthy, it's coated in a
layer of sticky mucus. This protects it from the
harsh acid that breaks down your food. If
something upsets this balance, you end up with
more stomach acid and not enough mucus. Over
time, that acid gnaws away at the tissue that
lines your stomach. The painful and sometimes
bloody open sore it causes is called an ulcer.
Some are tiny, while others are over an inch long.

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a break in the
inner lining of the stomach, first part of the
small intestine or sometimes the lower
esophagus.17 An ulcer in the stomach is
called a gastric ulcer, while that in the first
part of the intestines is a duodenal ulcer.1
The most common symptoms of a duodenal ulcer are
waking at night with upper abdominal pain or
upper abdominal pain that improves with
eating.1 With a gastric ulcer the pain may
worsen with eating.8 The pain is often
described as a burning or dull ache.1 Other
symptoms include belching, vomiting, weight loss,
or poor appetite.1 About a third of older
people have no symptoms.1 Complications may
include bleeding, perforation and blockage of the
stomach.2 Bleeding occurs in as many as 15 of
people.2

It is a condition where Sore in the Lining of the
Stomach or Duodenum which is first part the small
intestine. A burning sensation is the common
symptom of the peptic ulcer. It is caused by
Helico Pylori bacteria in the stomach and also
excess use of NSAIDs. The other complications
include bleeding, perforation and blocking of
passage of food due to obstruction from the
swelling or scaring that surrounds the
ulcer.Gastric ulcers- occur on the inside of the
stomach.Duodenal ulcers- that occur on the inside
of the upper portion of your small intestine.

If you are a smoker, cutting down or quitting
smoking will help heal the ulcers better. There
is no special diet for ulcers. Watch out for any
bleeding (blood in the stool or black stool )
from the ulcer which can be a serious
complication of an ulcer.
