What is Fetal Echo?
Fetal echo is a special test done via ultrasound
which requires special training and skills to
access the heart of the unborn baby. The
screening of the heart abnormality needs to be
done during the level scan. If any doubt
arises about the heart structure which cannot be
checked dur to babys position the it is best the
heart is evaluated by the pediatric cardiologist.

Who Needs Fetal Echo?
1. Ultrasound Identified Fetal Birth Defects of
the Current Pregnancy. 2. Monochorionic Twins. 3.
In Vitro Fertilization. 4. Maternal drug exposure
and Disease. 5. Family History of Congenital
Heart Disease. 6. Increased Maternal Risk for
Chromosomal Defects including Downs Syndrome. 7.
Other Rare Genetic Diseases with Normal Karyotype.

Why Doing Fetal Echo Is Important?
1. Congenital Heart Defects are the most common
birth defects in children. 2. 1 in 100 children
get affected by birth defects of the heart. 3.
1,75,000 children are born each year with heart
defects. 4. Majority dont get detected prior to
birth. 5. In developed countries 70 get
detected prior to birth.

Do All Patients Require a Fetal Echo?
Heart needs to be screened in all patients during
the Level Scan. Under following categories the
heart needs evaluation by a Cardiologist 1.
Inability to visualize to satisfaction any area
of the heart on Level 2. Any deviation from
the normal on Level 3. Any non-cardiac
abnormality warrants a Fetal Echo. 4. Any
maternal disease especially diabetes or higher
risk patients need fetal echo.

What is Congenital Heart Disease(CHD) Congenital
Heart Disease is a problem with the structure of
the heart. It is present at birth. Congenital
heart defects are the most common type of birth
defect. The defects can involve the walls of the
heart, the valves of the heart, and the arteries
and veins near the heart. They can disrupt the
normal flow of blood through the heart. The blood
flow can slow down, go in the wrong direction or
to the wrong place, or be blocked completely. .

Facts About Congenital Heart Disease
  • Congenital Heart Disease is the most common birth
    defect
  • 1 in 100 live born children have heart disease in
    India
  • There is clear evidence that CRITICAL CONGENITAL
HEART DISEASE if diagnosed prenatally has a major
impact on outcome, both immediate and long-term.
  • 1,75,000 children are born with CHD in India
    every year

Who is at a Higher Risk of Having A Baby with
Congenital Heart Disease?
1. Monochorionic Twins 2. In vitro
fertilization 3. Maternal drug exposure and
disease 4. Increased maternal risk for
chromosomal defects including Downs Syndrome 5.
Rare genetic diseases with normal Karyotype

Does Family History of Congenital Heart Disease
Affect New Born Baby?
In these 4 conditions congenital heart disease
may affect new born baby 1. If the previous
child was born with CHD, new baby risk is 1 in 20
to 1 in 100 2. If Mother has CHD, new baby risk
is as high as 1 in 5 to 1 in 20 3. If previous
two children were born with CHD, new baby risk is
1 in 10 to 1 in 20 4. If father has CHD, new baby
risk is 1 in 30

Many People Has a Question in Mind What is the
Right Gestational Age for Fetal Echo?
We are comfortable doing a fetal echo from 18
weeks pregnancy. There is enough time for the
family and the treating gynecologist to reach a
decision prior to the 20th week in the adverse
situation that a major heart anomaly is suspected.
