Introduction
  • The word "chikungunya" infers "to walk bent". The
    first outbreak of the disease Chikungunya was
    reported in countries of Africa, Asia, Europe and
    Islands in the Indian and the Pacific Ocean. The
    disease was first reported in 2013 in the Islands
    of the Caribbean.
  • Since then, more than 1.7million cases were
    reported suspecting Chikungunya in Latin America,
    the Caribbean Islands, and the United States.
    Canada and Mexico likewise have announced
    instances of infection.
  • Chikungunya is a viral illness that is spread
    through the bite of female mosquitoes Aedes
    albopictus which leads to sudden onset of fever
    associated with severe joint pain. The symptoms
    usually appear within 2-7days after being bitten
    by an infected mosquito. There is no effective
    antiviral treatment that exists for this disease
    till date. However, very rare cases have been
    reported to be life-threatening. The disease can
    be treated by aiming to relive the presenting
    complaints with rest, fluid, and medications.

Cause of Chikungunya
  • The chikungunya virus is affected to humans by
    the bite of an infected female Aedes species
    mosquito Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus.

Symptoms of Chikungunya
  • The virus causes a fever that lasts for less days
    and a joint pain that stays for weeks or months.
  • The symptoms include
  • Fever (sometimes up to 104 F)
  • Joint pain
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Rashes over the body
  • Swelling around the joints
  • Rarely symptoms like conjunctivitis, nausea,
    vomiting.

6 Wonderful Home Remedies for Chikungunya

1. Giloy Decoction
  • Take the Giloy powder and make decoction of the
    same and consume it thrice daily before food.
  • Giloy is a well proven drug in Ayurveda which
    acts wonderfully on chronic fever. Its also an
    effective anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and
    immunomodulatory properties and is capable of
    relieving symptoms of chikungunya. The plant also
    possesses antimicrobial property that fights
    against the infection caused due to the disease.

2. Fresh papaya leaves
  • Wash the fresh papaya leaves and remove the long
    stem part and its central vein. Chop the leaves
    and crush it with water. Blend it to a smooth
    paste. Squeeze the paste and strain the liquid
    from it. Discard the pulp. Drink the 2-3 table
    spoons of juice every three hours. Continue to
    drink for 5days.
  • In diseases like Chikungunya, Dengue etc. the
    platelet count will be markedly less. Papaya leaf
    intake has shown good increase in the count and
    helps in fast recovery from the disease. Studies
    have proven that papaya leaf extract had
    larvicidal properties which acts against the
    larva of the mosquito and helps in fast recovery.

3. Garlic Paste
  • Take 10-12 garlic cloves. Peel it and chop into
    medium pieces. Grind with sufficient amount of
    water and make it to fine paste. Apply this paste
    over the joints and leave it for few hours. This
    can be done twice daily.
  • Garlic is known to be a good anti-inflammatory.
    The garlic paste helps to relieve the pain in
    joints and improves circulation thereby reducing
    the inflammation

4. Turmeric powder with warm milk
  • To a glass of warm milk add sufficient quantity
    of Turmeric powder. Mix it well to avoid lump
    formation. Consume this twice daily in the
    morning and evening.
  • Turmeric contains Curcumin which is a strong
    antioxidant and is a best anti-inflammatory.
    These properties together will act on reducing
    the symptoms caused due to Chikungunya.

5. Coconut water
  • Drink 5 glasses of coconut water during the day.
    Continue to do this until the recovery.
  • Coconut water helps to alleviate the weakness
    caused during the disease. This contains
    electrolytes, which helps to refresh the body, by
    detoxifying the liver. The rich manganese content
    acts an anti-inflammatory agent which reduces the
    joint pain.

6. Application of Narayana Taila or Dhanwantaram
Taila
  • Narayana taila and Dhanwantaram taila application
    can be applied over the painful joints. This
    should be done daily for a long period, to get
    good results.
  • These help to reduce the joint pain and
    inflammation.
