What is an Internship?

• Internship is an opportunity provided by an
  employer to potential employees called interns.
• It is an on the job training.
• Interns are usually under graduates.
• Internships usually are of one to three months
  time.
• Internships can be either paid or voluntary.

Types of Internship

• Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
• Optional Practical Training (OPT)

• Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

• Training relates directly to the students major
  area of study.
• Training is an integral part of the schools
  established curriculum.
• Designated school official (DSO) authorized CPT
  in SEVIS, and the authorization prints on the
  students Form I-20.
• Occurs before the students program end date on
  the Form I-20.
• Authorization is for one specific employer and
  for a specific period of time.
• Student must secure the training opportunity
  before CPT can be authorized.

• Optional Practical Training (OPT)

• Training relates directly to the students major
  area of study.
• DSO recommends OPT in SEVIS.
• Student does not have to secure training before
  the DSO can recommend OPT.
• Authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and
  Immigration Service (USCIS), and the student is
  issued an Employment Authorization Document
  (EAD).
• Allows the student to work for any employer, as
  long as the training relates to the students
  major course of study.

• Plan Head. CPT Authorization Takes Lot

• Take the CPT Online Certification Course and
  Print Your CPT Online Workshop Completion Email.
• Speak with Your Company/Employer and Obtain a
  Detailed Training Description.
• Gather all required documentation. You may submit
  your CPT I-20 Request at the IC front desk (If
  you have NO questions).

• Meet with your Academic or Faculty Advisor to
  discuss your CPT plans in detail. Show your
  advisor the Detailed Training Description, if
  they believe the training is integral to your
  curriculum, they may recommend you for CPT.
• An International Student and Scholar Advisor will
  review your CPT application. If all requirements
  are met, the advisor will approve your CPT and
  create a CPT I-20 showing this approval.
• You will receive an e-mail once your CPT I-20 is
  ready. No work, paid or unpaid, may take place
  until your CPT I-20 is printed.
