1
Anorexia Nervosa 101 What is Anorexia? Signs and
Symptoms, Causes and Effects, and Treatment.
2
What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia is an eating disorder and mental health
condition in which a person thinks that they are
fat, even if they are underweight and because of
this distorted body image, they eat a lot less
food or exercise too much, or both, and doing so
can make them sick.
3
Signs and Symptoms of Anorexia
  • Here are a few signs and symptoms of anorexia
  • Low BMI
  • Restricted eating or missing meals altogether
  • Avoiding fattening foods
  • Obsessive and anxious attitudes about food
  • Taking appetite suppressants
  • Overuse of laxatives or diuretics
  • The cessation of monthly menstrual periods
    (amenorrhea)
  • Hair loss and dry skin

4
  • Eating disorders usually start when someone who
is already struggling with life begins to believe
that maybe their life would be better if they
were slimmer. Often this belief has its roots in
low self-esteem and poor body image.

5
Causes of Anorexia
The actual causes of anorexia are unknown.
Anorexia is a complex condition that is usually
caused by a combination of different biological
and environmental factors. Biologically,
research suggests that genetics play a part, as
well as irregular hormone functions and
nutritional deficiencies. Environmental factors
are not always involved but can trigger or worsen
an eating disorder.
6
Effects of Anorexia
Anorexia has severe effects as it has the highest
fatality rate of any psychiatric disorder. The
most vulnerable organ in the body is the heart.
The most common cause of death in anorexics is
heart disease. Moreover, According to Eating
Disorder Hope, The brain shrinks due to lack of
nutrition with a commensurate lowering of IQ.
The skeletal system is damaged, especially if the
anorexia occurs in teenagers before the bones are
fully developed. To know more, you can read on
the website.
