by Harry Lee, CEO of CitrusBits
With 2.1 million Android apps and 1.8 million iOS
apps on their respec- tive app stores today,
there is no shortage of mobile apps in the

strategy remains one of the most sensible growth
opportunities for businesses of any size. Mobile
apps are how people of all generations prefer to
engage with digital content of any kind. How do
you ensure that a mobile app youre working on
achieves its full potential, even in the face of
fierce competition and a crowded
marketplace? For CitrusBits, planning and
execution are paramount. Weve put to- gether
this ebook to share some of our proven tips and
best practices that have allowed our team to

CHAPTER 1
Product Strategy
Achieving success in the app business isnt quite
as simple as creating some- thing your users
love, though thats certainly a wise place to
start. There are many other strategic
considerations that must be fleshed out well
before you break ground and begin the process of
designing and developing your app. More
specifically, product strategy involves elements
such as your tech stack, monetization schemes
(free vs paid vs freemium), feature sets,
development roadmaps, knowing what success looks
like (e.g. metrics), and understanding your
resource requirements (budget and
timelines). Here are some tips to consider when
building the overarching strategies for your app
product.

Know your competitors Developing a product that
will exist within a competitive market requires
a deep understanding of your competitors
products today and equally important what
their strategies are going forward. Pay close
attention to any announcements/updates or
interviews that shed light into your
competitors roadmap, so you can try to compete
with the future version of your competitors
products. Consider taking a page out of the
consulting world and build a SWOT (Strengths,
Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis
for each of your direct competitors. Harry

Product Strategy
Fill in the blanks
Apps are designed to solve problems. Try to
finish this statement This app will make it
easier/more fun/etc for people to This is your
products ultimate mission statement. Keep that
statement simple maybe 1-2 sentences max. If
you need a whole paragraph to complete your
elevator pitch, its very possible that your app
idea is overly complex. Chandler Garbell, Art
Director
An MVP approach can allow you to validate your
apps market potential without having to
spend time/ money to build a full-featured
product.
Consider an MVP (minimum viable product) approach
If youre in a hurry to launch (for example, if
there are strong incentives to be the first to
market), or if current resources are scarce,
focusing on the minimum viable product (MVP) for
the first release could be the best way forward.
Launching quickly with JUST the absolutely
critical features can help you attain a
first-mover advantage and begin building a
critical mass of users and/or network effects
that may be difficult for future competitors to
overcome. An MVP approach can also allow you to
validate your apps market potential without
having to spend all the time and money youd
otherwise need to build a full-featured product.
James Hsu, VP of Growth Strategy
Match your growth/monetization strategy to your
resources If youve got ample funding and
runway, you can afford to focus on aggressive
user growth without immediately bombarding your
users with advertisements or pay gates both
of which can hamper your growth potential and
even doom an app from the start. On the other
hand, if you are bootstrapped and running on
limited funds, enact a more conservative growth
plan that utilizes sensible monetization
strategies to keep your business cash flow
positive (or less negative). Harry Lee, CEO
