6 Tips for Teaching Yoga

2
Develop your own personal practice
  • Being a teacher, you cannot just copy someones
style. It is only through your own personal
practice, you can find your touch, your strengths
    as a teacher.
  • Take out time for your own practice. Even attend
    classes from other teachers.

3
Focus on your students and be with them
  • Interaction with students is the key. It makes
you less self-conscious and more confident and
    helpful.
  • Walk around in the class rather than just staying
in the front. Motivate a student if he/she is
giving up on any asana. Be with your students so
that you can understand their needs.

4
Know your material
  • It is rightly said that knowledge is the key to
success. Having proper knowledge of what your
are teaching gives you immense confidence.
  • Read through the concept of each pose and how
breathing exercise can benefit your students.
Understand the philosophy and history behind yoga.

5
Be in the moment
  • Be it during your own practice or during the
class, just be in the moment. Enter the class
leaving all the stress at the door. Pay complete
attention to what is going on.
  • In your practice, focus on every minute detail.
Take your time, stay in the pose for as long as
you can. Focus on each movement and your breath.
  • During your class, be very clear on what your are
delivering to your students. This time, focus on
their movements and breath and help them where
    ever required.

6
Help students with their inner awareness
  • Help your students understand their bodies rather
than comparing with other students. What is easy
for one, may be difficult for other. Encourage
them to focus on the feel of the movement and
    breath.
  • They should understand that aim of doing yoga is
not to get into certain position, it is to know
your body and get more comfortable with it as
well as to keep our bodies and minds healthy .

7
Take it step by step
  • Take the through each step of the pose. Make them
understand that they can stop at any step along
    the way.
  • Encourage them to go till their limit and not
over doing it. They should be at the point where
they feel challenging but can breathe smoothly .

8
As a yoga instructor, it is your duty that every
student gets the most out of your class in a safe
and effective way. Following the above tips
might help you improve the overall experience of
the session, for students and for you as well.
