Title: What is Labyrinthitis

1
What is Labyrinthitis?
  • Labyrinthitis Causes, Symptoms, Treatment,
    Diagnosis

2
What is Labyrinthitis?
  • An inflammation or disorder in the inner ear that
affects the persons hearing ability and makes
him lose balance, causing loss of hearing and
disequilibrium or vertigo is known as
labyrinthitis. Cold, flu, a middle ear infection
that spreads in the inner ear are some of the
common factors that give birth to labyrinthitis
disorder. It commonly occurs in a person when a
vestibular nerve present in the inner ear becomes
damaged. When a person is suffering from a
Labyrinthitis, it makes one of the two vestibular
nerves inflamed, which is responsible for sending
signals to the brain for the body to function
properly and maintain balance. A person is likely
to deal with balance disorders and labyrinthitis
    headaches while suffering from labyrinthitis
    disease.

3
  • Consulting an expert neurologist is recommended
as soon as you start observing any labyrinthitis
symptoms to cure the condition. A delay in
medical help may make the condition worse. Your
doctor will carry a test to diagnose whether the
person is suffering from Labyrinthitis due to
viral infection or bacterial infection. A
majority of patients suffering from inner ear
infection due to labyrinthitis, find relief from
its symptoms in a week or two and recover
completely from labyrinthitis disorder within a
month or two if treated on time.

4
Labyrinthitis Symptoms
  • Intense labyrinthitis symptoms may strike a
person without any warning and pain. It may last
for up to several weeks and disappear on their
    own.

5
Some labyrinthitis symptoms which are experienced
by patients
  • Blurry vision or distorted vision
  • Loss of balance due to vertigo
  • Feeling of lightheadedness or you may feel like
    youre floating
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Ringing or buzzing in your ears known as tinnitus
  • Loss of hearing ability

6
Labyrinthitis Causes
7
  • The inner ear consists of tubes and sac known as
a labyrinth which consists of hair cells,
responsible for hearing and controlling balance.
Some of the common Labyrinthitis Causes are
  • An inner ear infection or disorder
  • Respiratory infections such as bronchitis
  • Viral infections of the inner ear
  • Stomach viruses
  • Herpesviruses
  • Bacterial infections including bacterial middle
    ear infections
  • Lifestyle habits like excessive smoking or
    drinking alcohol
  • Parental history

8
Labyrinthitis Diagnosis
9
  • To get the right labyrinthitis treatment,
diagnosing the underlying cause of labyrinthitis
disorder is a must. Your doctor will carry out
some vestibular tests like VNG, CCG, SVV DVA
for the correct diagnosis of the underlying
condition. In some cases, a complete physical
examination along with neurological evaluation is
performed by doctors to diagnose labyrinthitis.

10
Labyrinthitis treatment
  • Certain medications like Desloratadine
    (Clarinex), meclizine (Antivert), diazepam
(Valium), Corticosteroids, etc. helps in treating
labyrinthitis and reduces sudden strokes of
dizziness and nausea. Your doctor may even
prescribe you certain sedatives to prevent
    anxiety.
  •
  • Vestibular rehabilitation therapy or
labyrinthitis exercises are counted as one of the
    best Labyrinthitis treatment if medications
dont show any improvements. Therapies give
    optimum results.
  •

11
  • Make some changes in lifestyle habits by quitting
smoking and reducing the consumption of alcohol.
  • Taking little care in changing the position of
the head. It helps in easing the condition much
    faster.
