Wisdom tooth extraction is a debilitating thing.
Being a much-dreaded procedure, dentists
recommend it only as a last resort to serious
dental complications.
4
But having had it removed, there are a few things
that you can do to manage the pain and fasten the
recovery.
5
For everybody who has just had a wisdom teeth
removal Toronto procedure done, here are some
highly effectively post-op care instructions that
can bounce you back to your normal life in a
jiffy. Here are 5 things every patient needs to
do while in convalescence.
6
1. Bleeding is quite common on the first day
post-surgery. Thats nothing to be alarmed of.
What you must avoid doing though to not worsen
the bleeding is excessive spitting.
7
This can cause the blood clot that is stopping
the bleeding to release out of the socket.
Replace the gauze as and when instructed.
8
2. Take your medicines systematically as your
doctor recommends. If you are not in any pain
medication, OTC analgesics like Tylenol may help.
9
However, if you are on prescription medication
for the pain, there is no need to use additional
pain killers. You can cold compress the jaw with
an ice pack couple times a day to keep the pain
in check.
10
3. Post-surgery, there will be swelling and
bruising. The amount of swelling varies from
person to person. In most cases, the swelling of
the cheeks vanish after 4 to 5 days.
11
Until then, follow your doctors instructions.
Most surgeons recommend ice pack compression for
the swelling. The bruising however may take
longer to disappear.
12
4. Although physical activities do not seem to
have a direct connection with your teeth, post
removal, doctors recommend their patients to take
the rest of the day off.
13
You can return to your normal routine the next
day, but you must avoid any physical exertion the
first week after the surgery at least. Any
strenuous physical exercise can restart the
bleeding.
14
5. Your diet needs to be changed to adjust to the
care instructions for at least some time. The
first day, patients are allowed to eat nothing
except soft food. Yoghurt and applesauce are good
options for the first 24 hours.
15
A semi-soft diet can be started from the second
day onward but you must avoid hard, chewy and
spicy food until the bruising is healed. Drink
plenty of fluids, but skip caffeinated drinks,
alcoholic drinks and hot beverages the first day.
16
These coupled with after-meal mouth-rinsing
should ensure a quick and permanent recovery.
