Clean the Filter

• The clarity of a filter shall determine how
  adequate the amount of air will circulate over
  the evaporator coil and keep it from freezing
  up. 
• All you need to do is soak it in a detergent or
  soapy water and rinse off the crud using a soft
  brush.
• An AC should be cleaned approximately every month
  during its active season.

Wash the Pan and the Fan

• Both of the fans, the one near the evaporator
  that is a squirrel-cage type blower and the other
  bladed one near the condenser, need to be
  cleaned. 
• Take a detergent and scrub the dirt off the fan
  and rinse the debris and dirt off.
• Remount the housing and then refasten the screws.

Clean the fins

• Take the unit off the window frame (you might
  need a little help with that) and take it
  outside.
• Unscrew the housing, then spray a soapy solution
  with the help of a spray bottle on the fins.
• Using a soft-bristle brush, remove the
  accumulated dirt by moving the brush in an up and
  down motion.
• Then rinse it away using a hosepipe.

• Anything, when maintained well, lasts longer.
